Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!Duration: 6:45

Percy Eastman Fletcher (1879-1932) was born in Derby, England. He made his living as a Musical Director in the London theatre world, directing and orchestrating the long-running musical Chu Chin Chow. Fletcher was a prolific composer and wrote a large number of suites for light orchestra as well as military band marches The Crown of Chivalry, Spirit of Pageantry, V.C. March, and a Sultan's March, extracted from his musical 'Cairo In 1909 the Worshipful Company of Musicians in London, England offered 5 prizes for original military band compositions. This competition attracted the attention of some fine British composers. Holst's 'Suite in Eb' was placed 3rd and this Grand March, ' The Spirit of Pageantry' was awarded 2nd prize. The winning composer was B,Walton O'Donnell, who later became an outstanding Musical Director of the BBC Wireless Military Band. The Spirit of Pageantry is a wonderful evocation of Edwardian England and deserves to be reinstated into the Concert Band repertory

In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar's music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death in 1984 he composed the "Ceremonial March". Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar's catalogue of works, the characteristic "Pomp and Circumstances" marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.Duration: 5:30

This appealing and stately British style march has been a staple in the repertoire for young bands since it was first published in 1982. Written using a tempo which is slower than typical American marches, it opens with a feature for percussion and flutes. Gradually other sections join the mix until reaching the magnificent strains for full band. From there, the instrumentation thins out leading to a reprise of the flute and percussion statement. In three movements: 1. Coronation March, 2. Kingsfold and 3. Variations on a Green Theme. Coronation March is in ABA form with just a tip of the hat to William Walton's famous coronation marches written for British monarchs of the 20th century. Kingsfold is a lovely setting of the modal English traditional tune set to the text O Sing a Song of Bethlehem, featuring solos for flute and trumpet with chamber music textures. Variations on a 'Green' Theme begins with a jig in the percussion and reeds before slowly revealing the identity of the theme being varied - Greensleeves. A tour de force for advanced middle school bands or small high school bands.
