Madurodam is a small scale miniature town at Scheveningen (near The Hague) and is since many years one of the most important tourist attractions of the conurbation of Western Holland (called Randstad). On a scale 1:25 a charming picture of The Netherlands is given in bird's eye view: several important buildings, churches and townscapes are reconstructed up to the smallest details. There is also a fine transport system: a network of railroads, harbours and motorways covers the park and Madurodam Airport enables air traffic with all continents. Commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee of Yamaha for the Nemu Band Directors Clinic in Nemu no Sato, May 18-20, 1997. The surprising title of this work is an indication of its content. By combining the somewhat similar names 'Nemu no Sato' and 'Susato' into a new word, Jan Van der Roost has produced a significant and interesting subject. The Yamaha corporation has extensive facilities in Nemu no Sato, Japan, including a concert hall, recording studios, hotel and so on. Concerts, workshops, clinics and other events are held here, including the annual Nemu Band Directors Clinic, which consists of numerous musical events. Jan Van der Roost served as guest conductor and speaker in 1994. He was invited again for the 1997 clinic, this time with a composition assignment. The difficulty level of his piece was to be Grade 2 - 3 bands. With this in mind, Mr. Van der Roost strove to create a renaissance-like sound. Simultaneously he wished to create a tribute to Tielman Susato who, like Jan Van der Roost, lived and worked in Antwerp in the 16th century. The first performance of Nemu-Susato was conducted by the composer, performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Band, and took place during the Nemu Band Directors Clinic on May 19, 1997.Duration: 6.00

The Continental Overture was commissioned by the California Band Directors Association (CBDA) and was premiered on February 23rd 1997 at the 40th annual CBDA Conference in Bakersfield, California, by the California All State Symphonic Band, conducted by the composer. It is a short, dynamic work full of energy and spirit, with a melodic middle section and a spectacular ending. The composer does not try to hide his continental roots: several influences by some of the great European composers can be recognised. Duration: 6.45

£60.00Derbyshire Cavalry Marches (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Haydn, Joseph - Hash & Walters
Haydn wrote these marches during his second trip to London in 1794-95. The original autograph is titled "Two Marches Composed by J. Haydn for Sir Henry Harpur... to the Volunteer Cavalry of Derbyshire, embodied in the year 1794". Scored for the typical military band of the time, the instrumentation included a trumpet, two horns, two clarinet, two bassoons and a serpent (a curved bass instrument played with a cupped mouthpiece). Percussion parts would have been added by the regimental drum major and played by soldiers, not regular musicians. Due to a lack of printed marching books at the time, selection had to be short to facilitate easier memorisation. In this arrangement for modern concert band, the marches have been transposed from the original keys to Bb and F Major. Percussion parts have also been added by the arrangers and can be used at the director's discretion. Though these marches have been scored with the intermediate level band in mind, the integrity of the originals have been maintained, making them of interest to musicians and music students alike, at all levels.

Symphonic Variations was commissioned by Swindon Young Musicians' Club with funds provided by the W H Smith Arts Programme, and first performed by Swindon Young Musicians, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, at the Wyvern Theatre on January 29, 1989. The opening theme, stated in a Maestoso unison, provides the musical kernel for the entire work. The composer cleverly exploits all the rhythmic possibilities inherent within the chosen theme to provide a piece which is serious enough for detailed study and Festival usage, yet entertaining at the same time.

Cesarini composed this work as a tribute to the memory of Darius Milhaud, born a century earlier in Aix-en-Provence, France. The premiere, conducted by the composer, was presented by the Civic Philharmonic of Balerna in December, 1992. The titles of the four-part suite include: La Villageoise (The Village Maiden), Le petit berger (The Little Shepherd), La Princesse (The Princess) and Le Lutin (The Imp). The numerous musical reference themes begin with five folksongs from the Provence region and continue with melodies written by French composers of the seventeenth century. Additional interest is created by the use of old dance forms (Ronde, Musette, Pavane and Farandole) to illustrate each historical character.Duration: 9:30

Totally Tropical! is in bright Caribbean mood and will benefit from good, rhythmic playing.
