    Radetzky-Marsch, Op. 228 - Johann Strauss Sr.

Presented for the first time in August 1848 in Vienna, Johann Strauss Sr's Radetzky-Marsch is one of the most famous marches ever composed, dedicated to Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz. Strauss was commissioned to write it to commemorate Radetzky's victory in the battle of Custoza.Next to the waltz An der schnen blauen Donau - On the beautiful blue Danube - by Johann Strauss Jr, the Radetzky-Marsch has assumed the role of 'unofficial' Austrian anthem over time. When it was performed for the first time in front of officers, these began to beat their hands and feet to the rhythm of the music, giving life to a tradition often seen in many concert halls when the march is performed live. The Vienna Philharmonic always performs the march as the final piece in the famous New Year's Concert.

Suite (From Der Rosenkavalier) - Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is mainly known for his symphonic poems such as Don Juan, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben,... However, he also wrote many operas and "Der Rosenkavalier" (created in 1911 in Dresden) with a libretto by Von Hofmannsthal is probably the most popular of them all. In our "Jan Cober Series", we would like to present this very special arrangement of the suite from "Der Rosenkavalier". Jan Cober worked extensively on this arrangement and carefully composed this new suite. In this respect, he preserved the necessary mood and vitality of Strauss's music so it could be played by a brass band. He has done this without losing sight of the musicaltension of the original.

Serenade, Op. 7 in Eb - Richard Strauss / arr. Frederick Fennell

Written in 1881, this Serenade in E-flat for 13 wind instruments was written by Richard Strauss when he was only 17 years old. His father, the principal horn player with Munich's court orchestra, had a select list of older composers that he preferred, including Mozart and Mendelssohn, and his father's influence can be seen in his son's work, both in the inclusion of a larger horn section and the use of his father's more conservative musical preferences. The work is much more than simply a capable imitation of Mozart and Mendelssohn, though. It represents Strauss' filtering and distillation of these influences into something remarkably original and identifies the young man's future as one of the great composers. This edition by famed band master Frederick Fennell addresses balance issues and supplies the director with some additional instrumentation options. Instrumentation: 2.2.2+CBCl(opt).2+CBsn: 4.0.0.0: CtrBs(opt).

The Gipsy Baron - Johann Strauss Jr.

The operetta The Gipsy Baron is, together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat), the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance, original musical ideas, compelling Viennese dances, fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias, were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem, however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality, another melody was chosen. A great transcription to bring a Hungarian twist to any programme.
