Danceries (Set I) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hesketh, Kenneth

The term 'Danceries' can be found in a copy of Playford's Dancing Master, an extensive collection of folk and popular tunes of the seventeenth century (and no doubt earlier). This publication was used by master fiddle players to teach the various dance steps of the day to a nobleman's house or a king's court. Whilst this present set of 'Danceries' cannot be said to be an aid to terpsichorean agility, it will at least set feet tapping! The melodies themselves are a mixture of new and old--well, nearly. Where the old occurs it has been adapted in mood and composition and is often interspersed with completely new material. The harmonies and rhythms bring a breath of the new into these themes and add to the drama of the set.Movement 1: Lull me beyond thee. Gentle and lilting, almost a barcarole, this movement is very much a reverie. The original tune had the name 'Poor Robin's Maggot' - a rather disconcerting title; maggot, however, in seventeenth-century parlance meant whim or fancy. This theme can also be found in The Beggar's Opera by John Gay (first performed in 1728) under the title 'Would you have a young lady' (Air 21).Movement 2: Catching of Quails. A colourful, buoyant scherzo on an original melody. The thematic material is shuttled around the band to contrast with full-bodied tuttis. The last few bars fade away to almost nothing before a final surprise!Movement 3: My Lady's Rest. A tender pavane, also on an original theme, with Moorish leanings. Solos for principal winds and brass contrast with warmer tutti passages. The movement culminates with a final presentation of the theme before evaporating in held flute and trumpet chords.Movement 4: Quodling's delight. The final movement to the set combining one of the melodies from Playford's Dancing Master ('Goddesses') with an original contrasting melody. A dramatic and exuberant ending to the set of 'Danceries'.Duration: 12.00

Dona Nobis Pacem (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Dona Nobis Pacem is a three-part round by an unknown composer. It can be performed for many occasions, both in and outside church, often being used at Christmas. By the time of the holy crusades, this melody was incorporated into the Mass Ordinary (the manual of the holy mass). Dona Nobis Pacem is a free fantasia on this round, which itself naturally forms a part of the piece. If desired you can add vocals (solo or choir) to the band to enhance the spiritual feel of this fantastic work. 06:30

El Caracol Mifasol Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

El caracol (snail in Spanish) is the perfect illustration of the long slow process children must undertake when learning music. Ferrer Ferran composed this small musical poem to encourage the first, and sometimes difficult, steps in the fascinating world of music. The vocal part in this work can be performed by children taking their first steps in music. If there is no children's choir available the musicians in your band can sing the vocal part. This is a tremendously innovative piece that will help youngsters get involved in music-making. 05:32

Farewell Medley (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

While it can be fairly easy to select a musical piece for the beginning of a concert, the search for a proper closing piece can sometimes be more difficult. Helping to fill this gap was Stefan Schwalgin's motivation for this Farewell Medley. In this piece he has woven four world-famous folk tunes from the Anglo/Irish/Scottish culture (Danny Boy, Amazing Grace, The Last Post and Auld Lang Syne) into a high-quality arrangement that allows the band to display its full range of colours at the end of any concert. 05:50

Festa Paesana Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Lunteren, a village on the Veluwe (a wooded region in the Netherlands), sets the scene annually for a village festival dominated by folklore. Festa Paesana (Italian for village festival) is set to music by several folkloric sketches. The theme in Festa Paesana is partly based on a Dutch anthem (Wien Neerlands bloed); when other lyrics are used it is also known as the Lunteren anthem. The work begins with a festive introduction, completed by chimes and drums, in which pieces of the Lunteren anthem are heard. The music then transitions to represent a horse auction. We hear horses run their first rounds in the auction ring while being whipped. The following theme is partly based on the anthem. The tension of the traditional auction is amplified by an ever-increasing cadence, reaching its climax when the word ?Sold!? is shouted. The night ends with a majestic variation on the Lunteren anthem. The next morning, when the tower clock hits seven times, the village is awaked by the reveille of the heralds. In a fugatic version of the anthem, we can hear the village slowly come to life. This evolves with the chiming of all towers in the village; the celebration can begin. Carriages drawn by horses rumble through the village and thus, it is easy to hear when a horse hesitates or runs amuck. A traditional folk dance group then dances a whirling waltz while the audience shares their pleasure. Musicians march along the scene and take over the waltz theme in their march. Until deep in the night, the musicians are still heard playing in the streets. Meanwhile, we hear the anthem theme being played in a choral variation (in minor). The first time it is played quietly, as a preparation for Sunday. Then it is played in a celebrating way, enabling the devout village residents to remember the past pleasant celebration with satisfaction. 0:08:10

From Russia with Love Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

A characteristic of many Russian folksongs is the emotion that they contain - sometimes exceptionally fierce, sometimes, in contrast, resigned and melancholic. This makes the music captivating and gives it its special, distinctive atmosphere. The same can also be said for From Russia with Love, in which Roland Kernen has made use of three beautiful Russian love songs. In the cheerful and stirring Kalinka, the singer tells of a girl whom he fell head over heals in love with, so much so that she is always on his mind. Lutshje Bulo is the story of a man who wants to break up with his girlfriend and in Otschi Tschornije attention is focused on a dangerous woman who can seduce many men with her piercing black eyes. 0:07:20

Jingle Jumble (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

It can be hard to "jingle all the way" when the notes are all out of order! The familiar strains of "Jingle Bells" are put through the blender as Matt Conaway rearranges and reverses the tune until you're not quite sure it can be put back together. Great fun for your youngest bands!
