Prologue and Festiva
This new concert work combines a bold and noble opening with a fresh, vibrant multi-metered allegro section which presents a unique challenge to everyone in the ensemble. Commissioned to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the International Music Camp which is held annually at the Peace Gardens on the border of North Dakota and Canada, this work establishes a celebratory tone from the very beginning. Shadowplay
Shadowplay is a descriptive, impressionistic work inspired by an early morning walk along the beach of the composer's home in Vancouver, Canada. The music reflects the play of light and shadow with the rising of the sun through the trees. It begins calmly, with the sunrise as the light melts the shadows. The piece develops with the sounds and sights of nature; seagulls floating in the air and the crashing of the waves. Shadow becomes light ; light becomes shadow. The music ebbs and flows as the sun rises higher on the horizon. "Shadowplay" features a variety of tonal colors and textures, orchestration which is sometimes haunting and transparent, sometimes rich and lush, yet always evocative. After a dramatic build, the music subsides, with all of the melodies interweaving like a tapestry of light and dark and ending as it began, with emotional sensitivity. Features, lyrical solos by soprano saxophone, flute and flugelhorn. An ideal piece for concert or festival use to display sensitivity and dynamics.

Spring March by Jonathan Dagenais was written for the Saint-Edmond High School music program in Quebec, Canada. Spring March is a short, lively, and exciting concert march for beginner bands. With several thematic and humorous elements, this piece is a fun way to work on lightness of style, functional balance, tempo stability, and is perfect for teaching cut time and the traditional march form and structure. There are clear stylistic contrasts between all the different sections of the piece and the beautiful lyrical trio section offers a great opportunity to work on phrasing and support. £60.99After the Cakewalk - Robert Nathaniel Dett
Despite his having moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old, Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada where glimpses of his talent had already begun to manifest themselves at an early age. Among Dett's earliest titles was his Characteristic March Two-Step, After the Cakewalk. Perhaps written when Dett was just a teenager, this current edition is wholly based upon its original 1901 band publication that was arranged by Lee Orean Smith. Smith was also responsible for preparing Dett's piano solo version for publication, as well as its form for theatre orchestra and mandolin club. Owing to the fact that Smith's highly idiomatic scoring was prepared for a band of that period, this edition adapts, edits and extends Smith's instrumentation in order to make it possible for Dett's music to become available to a new generation of musicians and listeners alike. (Grade 4)
