The song "Annie Laurie" was written to her by William Douglas, and amended by Lady John Scott. This song was a favorite with Scottish soldiers during the Crimean War. Composer Carl Strommen gives us a wonderful new setting of this popular folk song that explores all of the glorious colors of the modern concert band. Haleakala (House of the Sun) - Carl Strommen
Named for a volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Haleakala is a boldly conceived and sumptuously scored tribute to the wonder of nature. A series offerilliant fanfares, with prominent use of the brass section, leads to a broad chorale theme for the wind section that soon acquires a noble counter melody from the horn choir. After a splendidly sonorous climax, the fanfare material returns to close the piece in a grand style. This selection will work particularly well as a concert opener.

Beginning with a Copland-esque brass and percussion fanfare, this piece leads to an all-out lush harmonic flourish, subsiding into a military-style patrol march, with the sounds of echoes, evoking troops marching over the hill and then moving away.
