Haleakala (House of the Sun) - Carl Strommen
Named for a volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Haleakala is a boldly conceived and sumptuously scored tribute to the wonder of nature. A series offerilliant fanfares, with prominent use of the brass section, leads to a broad chorale theme for the wind section that soon acquires a noble counter melody from the horn choir. After a splendidly sonorous climax, the fanfare material returns to close the piece in a grand style. This selection will work particularly well as a concert opener.

Partita Piccola - Henk van Belcum
As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer Knig as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Hndel's Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a specialatmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major new concert work for advanced bands.

£174.99Le Lion de Belfort - Jan de Haan
Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation, who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret.The work's premire took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010, 130 years after sculptor Frdric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.

It is used by many folk music groups and many is familiar with the choir Grex Vocalis version recorded on the album Norwegian Moods released in 1990.This arrangement waswritten in 1994 to His Majesty The Kings Guards band in Norway and was performed in concerts and recorded with Susanne Nst as soloist.

Often, most players have similar rhythm and phrasing, but with different pitches. Extended harmonies and ensemble balance are also elements to work on. Two groups havespecial roles: * If you perform the arrangement instrumental, 1st Altosax and Tenorsax are both important. The solos may be played as written or improvised. There is also an optional womens choir arrangement (SSAA) includedin the set.* The bass line is also challenging and very important. Make it groove!

In 1725 J.S. Bach composed the cantata BWV79 Gott, der Herr, is Sonn' un Schild for the celebration of the Reformation. Originally written for three vocal soloists, choir, and orchestra, Cantata No. 79 is partially based on thewell-known hymn Now Thank We All Our God, the melody of which is attributed to Martin Rinckart. This arrangement for concert band by Robert van Beringen combines part of the first movement (Coro) with an ensemble from the thirdmovement (Choral).

£53.50Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs
The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Dona Nobis Pacem is a three-part round by an unknown composer. It can be performed for many occasions, both in and outside church, often being used at Christmas. By the time of the holy crusades, this melody was incorporated into the Mass Ordinary (the manual of the holy mass). Dona Nobis Pacem is a free fantasia on this round, which itself naturally forms a part of the piece. If desired you can add vocals (solo or choir) to the band to enhance the spiritual feel of this fantastic work.

Anton Bruckner is probably best known today as a symphonist however he was also a significant composer of religious works, motets and masses, and the composer of the great Te Deum. These choral works portray equally as much of Anton Bruckner's power as his symphonies. With his unique gift for unlocking the secret and beauty of choir singing he was a true master in this genre. This arrangement for concert band by Thomas Doss retains the character and homogeneity of the original choral work and is a stunning addition to the concert band repertoire.
