The Long Day Closes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sullivan, Arthur - Sparke, Philip

Although Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) is best known for his collaboration with W.S. Gilbert on their famous operettas, he also wrote much instrumental, chamber and orchestral music, church anthems and around 20 secular part songs. One such song was The Long Day Closes which has remained in the popular repertoire of many male voice and mixed choirs. The melody is a combination of hushed hymn-like reverence and emotional intensity, which provides the young band the opportunity to work on dynamics, ensemble, intonation and balance in chorale style.Duration: 3:00

Time Lines (Concert Band - Score only) - Turnbull, Kit

The time line is a western musicological device that allows us to define many of the rhythms used in sub-Saharan music. It is essentially a 12-beat pattern that can be subdivided as 6x2, 2x6, 4x3, or 3x4, which generates many of the polyrhythms that are common in African music. Time Lines is a single continuous work made up of four contrasting sections which are based on various aspects of African dance and choral music. The slow introduction introduces many of the rhythms that the piece is based on and is followed by a fast section which quotes a South African hymn. Abasundu Nabamhlope (the first line of which translates as 'Black and whites, let them give thanks together'. The chorale section which follows makes use of phrases from the hymn Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (Lord Bless Africa) which was written in 1897 and has since been adopted as the national anthem of several countries in southern Africa. The final allegro section sees the drawing together of the various dance and choral elements used in the piece with the percussion section playing rhythmic patterns generated by the time line.Duration: 13:30Recorded on QPRM151D TIME LINES: Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.12 (Royal Northern College of Music)

Adagio for Winds (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Adagio for Winds is similar in atmosphere to the well-known Canterbury Chorale (also by Jan Van der Roost), in that it has no exaggerated melodrama, but rather a melodically wide and expressive approach. The work is full of beautiful lyrical melodies and the warm harmony and the full orchestration give the audience and the band the chance to give their thoughts free reign in a contemplative atmosphere. Adagio is a wonderfully uplifting work suitable for concerts on all occasions and is certainly not one to be missed.Duration: 5:00

Triumph of the Skies (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stalman, Wim

In Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, one of the most sung Christmas chorales in the world, the announcement of Jesus' birth is highlighted. The melody, originally written by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, has been given words, in which people are called to listen to the glad tidings as sung of by the angels. In their triumphant singing they express their joy and excitement about the birth of Christ. In this work, the chorale Hark! The Herald Angels Sing has been integrated in its entirety, so that it can also be performed with choir and/or community singing. This is a wonderful addition to the Christmas concert band repertoire.Duration: 6:30

Confession (Movement 2 from Symphony of Prayer) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schmidt, J. Eric

This remarkable composition is the second movement to Eric Schmidt's colourful and dramatic symphony for band. A dark and energetic work, Confession is based on a three-note motive, beginning with a menacing opening, but finally yielding to a beautiful chorale that provides a transition to a somber and reverent conclusion. Brilliant orchestration and well-crafted use of creative thematic material make this a most expressive work. Thanksgiving, the popular third movement of the Symphony of Prayer is also available and makes an excellent choice when performed following Confession.Duration: 6.00

Our Kingsland Spring (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

Movement I of Georgian Suite. This lyrical work uses flowing melodic lines and creative scoring to create an effective setting for young bands. Sam skilfully alternates sections of light and delicate writing with full broad-sounding chorale passages in a work that definitely sounds more impressive and complex than its easy level would indicate.Duration: 3.30

Arden Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Edmunds, John F.

Arden Variations is a theme and variations form in three movements, each replete with melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic variations on the simple 8-bar chorale theme of the opening Prelude. Originally intended as an analytical study for students in the composer's Advanced Harmony course at Louisiana State University, the piece seemed to demand further development as each new harmonic device was introduced. Its frequent distant-key modulations and varied rhythmic excursions keep the simple melody alive and interesting throughout its six-and-a-half minute length.Duration: 6:30
