In 1780, Lord Charles Cornwallis attempted to invade Charlotte, but the city's residents united and expelled him. General Cornwallis went on to describe the city as "a hornet's nest of rebellion." In this Revolutionary War inspired piece, a strong florid melody is passed around the various sections of the ensemble. This work is a great opportunity for more advanced bands to focus on stylistic playing between the bright and triumphant theme and quieter larghetto passage. The protagonist, Daniel Sempere, is the teenage son of an antiquarian book dealer, who one day takes him to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a mysterious place with labyrinthine corridors where rare and banned books are stacked in massive dusty piles. His father tells Daniel to select a book, but it will be his responsibility to protect it. Daniel picks La Sombra del Viento (The Shadow of the Wind), a novel by a forgotten author Julin Carax. Daniel immediately starts reading the book, and the story unwinds itself into a compelling and complicated plot. As he reads, Daniel finds himself and his own life merging into the story's plot. It transpires that there is a mysterious man named Lan Coubert ('the man without a face') who is determined to destroy all copies of Carax's books. Daniel is threatened by Coubert and is determined to find out what happened to Carax, who fled to Paris and subsequently disappeared. Daniel finds that his own life has much in common with the author's. The book mixes magic realism, page-turning mystery, and Daniel's own real life. Daniel's once ordinary teenage existence is now filled with larger-than-life colorful and at times, terrifying characters. Among them are Fermn Romero de Torres, a beggar who Daniel and his father befriend and employ in the family bookstore; the evil police inspector Javier Fumero, who could be compared to Scarpia in Puccini's opera Tosca or Javert in Les Misrables. The corrupt Fumero uses the war as an excuse to practice his sadism and is widely feared in Barcelona. He is represented in the music by a fascist military march. The city of Barcelona becomes a character in the book and in the music. The Ramblas, the boulevard running through Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and the famous caf Els Quatre Gats (the four cats) come alive in the score through a Cobla, the traditional wind ensemble playing a sardana, typical Catalan folk music. Two parallel love stories turn up the heat: Julin Carax's passionate, forbidden love for Penlope, and Daniel's equally passionate and forbidden love for Beatriz (Bea). When asked by the city of Biberist (Switzerland), to compose a piece for its 150th anniversary, Gauthier Dupertuis thought of a frenetic work, possessed with energy and a constant pulsation from the first to the last note. In this sense the composer was inspired by "plasma", the fourth state of matter (after the solid, liquid, and gaseous states) which makes up, for example, lightning or the sun. Like a plasma ball, whose colors and shapes constantly vary, the musical material of the work is gradually transformed, both in the rhythmic signatures and harmonies and in its atmospheres: it is the same material, but always under a different shape. Sometimes rhythmic and dancing, sometimes solemn and majestic, or soft and lyrical, the work finds its unity in the omnipresence of an ostinato and similar rhythmic and melodic structure. Plasma was premiered in September 2024.

Rotterdam 1945 was written at the request of Maestro Arjan Tien, the chief conductor of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, to commemorate their 75th anniversary in 2020. 1945 also marked the end of World War II, the year that my home country Holland was liberated from Nazi Germany. My father was born in Rotterdam in 1910, so I have a special bond with this dynamic city. I have used the numbers 1-9-4-5 to create the main theme and translated it into a four-note motif: C - D'- F - G.

This work is a close-up of the encounters and relationships of trust between people, following the idea that "friendship lasts forever." After the passing of Satoshi Yagisawa's close friend and work partner, Tsutomu Murata, a designer of Neo Create in August 2020, the composer began work on this piece. Murata performed music for audiences primarily as a leader and conductor of Kurume City Brass, a group which is active in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Eternal Frienship depicts a five-minute chorale which explores "how music can convey that a close friend is indispensable to you, more broadly, everyone to someone," much like how Murata conveyed the appeal of music to his audiences. Under the direction of the composer himself, the work had its world premiere and was recorded with the Kobe College Wind Orchestra.

In 1934, the city of Melbourne celebrated its centenary and marked the occasion with the MacRobertson International Air Race. KLM's entry was its first DC-2, PH-AJU 'Uiver' (Stork), which took off on 20 October 1934. Shortly before the finish, the plane had to make an emergency landing due to poor weather conditions. The following morning, the entire town turned out to dig the aircraft out of the mud, enabling to resume its flight. Nonetheless, the distance was covered in three days, 18 hours and 17 minutes: a winning performance! This programmatic piece tells the story describing the start of the engines in bar one, the flight over the clouds, the thunderstorm, theemergency landing and many more scenes!
