Dancescriptions - Peter Kleine Schaars
Dancescriptions combines many styles derived from pop music with techniques from classical composition. The styles are not the focal point; the true musical definition comes from the interpretation of the transition passages. After the statement of a rhythmic and melodic cell the music is developed from the thematic material in the appropriate style - soul music, disco, merengue, ballad and rock - in the Big Band tradition. The different rhythms and genres are interwoven and combined to create a natural flow in this musical puzzle.

Composer Chris Brubeck wrote Ghost Walk as part of his BandQuest residency at West Rocks Middle School in Connecticut. The piece combines Brubeck's lifelong experiences with both jazz and classical idioms, creating a work that's as fun to play as it is to hear. The title was inspired by the wedding of Brubeck's son at Gettysburg College, which hosts a ghost walk, as well as the minor mode and haunting atmosphere of the piece. Learn more on YouTube! The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece.Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Capriccio Italien was based on Italian folk songs and was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1880. The work was inspired by his trip to Rome. This fantasy utilizes the capriccio's themes in order to capture the essence of Tchaikovsky's music for concert band. Although technically reduced for medium to medium-easy ensembles, it still retains all the fire and energy of the masterwork. This is a wonderful selection to not only introduce a classical composer but to also work on phrasing, balance, and dynamic contrasts.

Just as its title suggests, this three-movement contemporary work draws from various types of pop music and dance forms, and sets them in a symphonic framework. The opening movement, Overture, is a short fanfare based loosely on Irish dance rhythms and melodies. The second movement, Ballad, receives its inspiration from various aspects of pop ballads, though no direct references are made. Dense harmonies and interesting textures play an important role throughout the movement. The final movement, Fusion, is a literal combination of rock, funk, swing, and classical in a contemporary setting. Intense and driving, this is an excellent concert finale! You may even want to consider performing the last movement alone as an encore.
