It was written for the 1986 All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra for their combined performance on November 22, 1986 in Hastings, NE. This majestic work lends itself as a finale, for band alone, or a combined performance with string orchestra and/or choir (available separately). There are two sets of lyrics (secular and Christmas).

Concert Piece - Claude T. Smith
Written for accomplished soloist Brian Bowman, principal Euphonium in the US Air Force Band, as a commissioned work under conductor Col. Arnald Gabriel, this composition is for virtuoso soloist and concert band. It calls for expressive phrasing especially through the Lento and Andante sections. Smith incorporates mixed meters and his signature 7/8 bar to create a dance-like lift. A concert showpiece that contains a challenging cadenza for the soloist. Also provided is the cadenza as performed by Bowman.Solo is grade 6.

Here is an exciting composition full of the multi-rhythms combined with the Smith harmonies that make his works unique. Following a jubilant introduction, the saxophones set the melodic line, which is augmented by the full band. Brass pyramids lead into a slow lyrical section with French Horn backgrounds. A modulation follows leading into a recap of the opening theme. The driving percussion pattern is soon augmented by more instruments building to a dramatic finale.
