ILLYRIAN DANCES (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy
Includes:I. RondeauII. AubadeIII. GigueThis suite of three dances was commissioned by the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles with funds provided by West Midlands Arts. The first performance took place on 26th September 1986 at Warwick University during the fifth annual BASBWE Conference. As with Gallimaufry, some of the thematic material is adapted from music originally written for productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company.The precise location of Illyria was not important to Shakespeare; what excited him was the resonance of the word itself and the romance of all far away, make believe places. Illyria is Never Never Land and the idea of inventing dances for such a place intrigued me.The opening Rondeau has a seven bar refrain with a rhythmic twist to it, which alternates with variants highlighting most sections of the orchestra. The Aubade is a gentle dance in ternary form featuring the flutes, with a hint of the dawn chorus at the close. The final Gigue is a rondo in six-eight time, with the recurring theme also appearing in counterpoint to the many subsidiary themes.Illyrian Dances is dedicated to my old and good friend Timothy Reynish.-GW

Klezmer Discovery Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The Yiddish word 'Klezmer' has been derived from the Old Hebrew words 'Kley' (tool, instrument) and 'Zemer' (song, singing, making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music, Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. 'Klezmer Discovery' is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe.The introduction consists of a number of motives from different traditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L'cha Dodi), followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel's Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently, 'Der Terk in Amerika', a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast, cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of 'Klezmer Discovery' (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele). 12:00

Mr. Sandman Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The Emmylou Harris version of Pat Ballard's Mr Sandman was an international hit. In this arrangement Klaas van der Woude shows this song is also perfectly suited for three instrumental soloists with brass band accompaniment. The special close harmony effect is obtained by a tight three-part arrangement of the melody. This work is cast in four movements: Introit; Impromptu; Elegy (31.12.04); Finale. Grade 5. (Recorded on QPRM150D, CHIVALRY, Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra) PARTITA FOR CONCERT BAND is cast in four movements: Introit - begins majestically with brass, saxes and percussion carrying the main theme from which most of the following ideas originate. It is repeated by the woodwinds and moves via a solo side drum into the piu mosso. New ideas are introduced by trombones, the horns and euphoniums leading to the central idea played by oboe. This leads, in turn, via full band to the closing movement. 2. Impromptu -once again the opening theme is the basis of the whole movement, using most of the composer's tricks, augmentation, retrograde, inversion and fugato, it moves along in a very confident style. A muted solo trumpet links into the third movement. Elegy (26/12/04) - this movement was prompted by the devastating events of Boxing Day 2004, the Asian Tsunami. The movement opens bleakly until a solo flute gives us the main theme over a troubled accompaniment. The opening mood returns but timpani and tam-tam herald return of the main theme for the full band. The opening theme is heard again as the music subsides but never settles. Finale - this spirited 6/8 vivo opens up with percussion and horns and trumpets announce the main idea, punctuated with short chords from the lower band. A new four bar theme is heard over a bass tread, the theme overlaps itself and quavers swirl up and down the band. Material from the first movement is heard transformed by the energy of the finale and the music surges towards a sudden close. Performance time: 15:35

Development is replaced by a parade of incomplete parodies: a waltz almost in the style of Chopin; a sort of Tango; a Mahlerian march; something close to Janacek; a cheap imitation of a Flamenco; a corruption of Oranges and Lemons; a pop song; a military march which gets somewhat out of hand; a Viennese Waltz to set your feet tripping, and an even cheaper imitation of a Flamenco. At the end of the work the associated material of the opening reappears in maturity; the major ideas play a subservient role, reappearing only in the final coda. Duration: 14 mins.
