Georgia on My Mind (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schaars, Peter Kleine

This jazz ballad from 1930 is probably one of the most covered standards of all times. The most famous interpretation dates back from 1960, covered by the one and only Ray Charles. Since then, in 1979 the song was declared the official state anthem for Georgia in the United States. Top arranger Peter Kleine Schaars has now made an amazing arrangement for band using the Ray Charles version - it's so close to the original that you can still feel the vibe of the 60s. March Prelude: Alnwick Town (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

March Prelude: Alnwick Town was commissioned by the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band (with Ray Thompson as conductor) to celebrate their first 25 years. It opens majestically with answering phrases between various sections of the band, leading to a faster march-like section, its main theme echoes the rhythms of the opening material. A bridge passage featuring snippets for saxophones and trumpets leads to a new theme, more legato in nature and repeated after a change of key. The bridge passage returns to herald a restatement of the main theme before the opening material reappears to close the work with a flourish.Duration: 3.45

Light Music (Concert Band - Score only) - Wiffin, Rob

The title Light Music alludes to different things. Most of the music in the suite is light in nature, and is in the inherently British tradition of 'light music' - original pieces which are often descriptive but essentially melodic. In another sense the music depicts various aspects of light itself. The title itself is a trick of the light! The first movement, Lightscape, portrays shifting patterns and types of light, highlighting some details and obscuring others. It is sometimes vibrant, dancing and full of movement, and sometimes tranquil. The second movement, At the going down of the sun, considers the light of the sun as it sets. Because of the nature of his career, the composer has written a fair amount of ceremonial music and this movement is close to that genre once again. There is, in the title, a reference to the familiar Remembrance line 'At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them' from the poem For the Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) written in September 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. While the music is not a setting of these words - or in any way referential - there is an echo of the words 'We will remember them'.The suite finishes with Set Alight which starts off with a few combustible bars as the flame catches and then the fire is under way.Duration: 11.30

Aurora Dances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Aurora Dances was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based Winter Band Festival, and consists of three movements, to be played without a break. Aurora Borealis opens with florid woodwind figures and highlights different sections of the band in turn. The second movement Aurora Australis leads to a sombre chorale, which builds to a full-band climax. The finale Aurora Dances is characterised by rhythmic, dance-like themes. A central section features a contrasting legato melody, but this doesn't dispel the energetic feel of the opening, which returns to close the work.Duration: 8.45

Gemini Concerto (Trumpet and Euphonium Duet with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Gemini Concerto was commissioned by and written for Ryukoku University (Japan), Andre Henry and Shoichiro Hokazono. Set in three movements, the concerto aims to explore the close relationship, as solo instruments, between the trumpet and euphonium, exploiting the many common factors between the two as well as the subtly different characteristics they possess in terms of both lyrical and rhythmic playing. The first movement is a bustling toccata and the second movement is lyrical and improvisatory in nature. A fantastic piece and a great addition to the repertoire!Duration: 11.00

The Graces of Love (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waespi, Oliver

The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of my piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze... (Veiled Beauty...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied and developed. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. It brings the work to a close with a hypnotic rhythm which is noble and virtuosic at the same time.Duration: 12.45

Song of Peace (Trumpet Duet with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

A reflective piece featuring two trumpets and band but also playable as a solo for trumpet, trombone or euphonium. The composer wrote Song of Peace just after a close friend died suddenly. It was cathartic really, just written to reflect the release from pain to peace. It fits the expressive style and power of the solo brass instruments. Duration: 3.45
