The music of Sailing is characterized by an atmosphere that is vibrant and full of energy. The piece depicts a ship's journey on the ocean, the colors of which can readily change from a rich, welcoming blue to a dark, menacing gray. Sometimes the ship is sprayed by the waves: sometimes the ship floats blithely along a sea of tranquility. Articulations play a prominent role in this piece, with a combination of staccatos and slurs expressing sensations of happiness and joy in the ocean journey. Kivgik - Carl Strommen
Meaning messenger in Inuit, Carl Strommen's piece Kivgik was inspired by the composer's observance of a large gathering of the Inuit people in Alaska. Carl has tried to emulate the sound of their drums being used to communicate between tribes. The piece also contains bold harmonic colors and driving 6/8 rhythms. There is a nice repose section in the middle of the piece that symbolizes the more solemn parts of this annual gathering or Kivgik. Quirks - Brant Karrick
Quirks'a word defined as a sudden sharp turn or an unpredictable peculiarity of behavior or action'demonstrates the capricious nature of the title in its musical character.
