Diamond Reflections was composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The work progresses from a somber, militaristic intro to a jovial symphonic ending, exploring various ensemble colors along the way. The U.S. Air Force Song is suggested throughout the work and the Air Force Hymn, Lord, Guard & Guide, makes an appearance as a trumpet solo and horn soli. Aurora Eclipsedwas inspired by the solar eclipse of 2017.During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This "ring of fire" is actually the sun's outer edges being revealed to the human eye. The rhythmic pattern of this piece teaches students eighth note patterns, and each section has an opportunity to play the melody. The use of a variety of colors and sforzandos makes this an aggressive composition that younger students will enjoy playing.

Meaning "messenger" in Inuit, Carl Strommen's piece Kivgik was inspired by the composer's observance of a large gathering of the Inuit people in Alaska. Carl has tried to emulate the sound of their drums being used for communication. The piece also contains bold harmonic colors and driving 6/8 rhythms. There is a nice repose section in the middle of the piece that symbolizes the more solemn parts of this annual gathering or Kivgik.
