Victor Hely-Hutchinson is best known for his Carol Symphony, composed in 1927, from which the third movement was used for the title music of the 1943 Children's Hour and 1984 BBC children's television adaptation of John Masefield's The Box of Delights, in particular the variation on the theme of The First Nowell. The first movement is based on O come, all ye faithful, with the second movement being based on God rest ye merry Gentlemen. The third movement includes The Coventry Carol and The First Nowell, with the final movement concluding with Here we come a-wassailing and a return to O come, all ye faithful. We are then taken through the bazaars of the city as the markets are filled with joyful shouting and music and dance before entering the central courtyards, the royal army saluting their newly crowned king, heralding in a new era of glory.

The Gift of Life was written early in 2015 as a commission to honour a retiring Minister of Music at a church in Dallas, Texas. In planning this piece, John Rutter has stated: In 1985 I had written a Requiem - which, like any Requiem, inevitably reflects on death - why not write the opposite, a work celebrating life? Unlike a Requiem, where a set form of words is laid down in Catholic liturgy, no framework exists for a celebration of life, and I had to choose (and in three cases, write) texts which were appropriate to a theme rarely expressed in music since Haydn's wondrous oratorio The Creation in 1798. The six movements reflect different facets of the miracles of creation and of life. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Concert Band alone.
