Edvard Grieg (1843--1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short-tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households. Composed in 1966, this three movement work is performed regularly in contests and festivals as well as on concert band programs globally. The unique setting of this original work provides subtle challenges to the performers and conductor with enhanced interest for the listener. The movements are "March"---non-characteristically scored in alternating 4/4 and 3/4 time, "Waltz"---similarly juxtaposed in alternating 3/4 and 2/4 time, and the raucous "Rondo." was written in 1928 as a test piece for the National Brass Band Festival championship competition held that year. The three-movement work includes a jaunty "Scherzo," a lovely "Nocturne," and the popular "March," which has enjoyed countless performances since its premiere. Douglas E. Wagner created this arrangement with younger players in mind. Though slightly abridged, the main themes and styles are present in a carefully-crafted performance piece accessible to concert bands at this level. This authentic arrangement still bears Holst's unmistakable musical signature. (3:35)
