Prelude to a Pageant was commissioned by Woodley Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2014. Celebratory in nature, Prelude to a Pageant includes a famous musical link to The Reading Rota (Sumer is icumen in), a manuscript dating from around 1240, discovered nearby Reading Abbey. This lively tune appears early in the work, after an arresting, rhythmic opening and expressive slower section, and also forms the final climax.

Symphonic Prelude was written on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the St. Andrews school centre in Singapore. After a festive opening in the trumpet(s), a brisker passage based on the school song follows, which then leads to a lyrical middle section. At the close, the opening motif reappears and comes to the fore. The colourful, dynamic instrumentation makes this Symphonic Prelude an excellent appetizer to open your concert.

American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" and was composed in honour of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favourite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. March Prelude: Alnwick Town was commissioned by the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band (with Ray Thompson as conductor) to celebrate their first 25 years. It opens majestically with answering phrases between various sections of the band, leading to a faster march-like section, its main theme echoes the rhythms of the opening material. A bridge passage featuring snippets for saxophones and trumpets leads to a new theme, more legato in nature and repeated after a change of key. The bridge passage returns to herald a restatement of the main theme before the opening material reappears to close the work with a flourish.Duration: 3.45

Festival Prelude 'Ad Excel' was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for 'to excel' but also celebrates the band's anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close. Duration: 5.00

In 1955, Walton received two honorary doctorates: from the Universities of Cambridge and London. He also composed this Shakespeare film music for Laurence Olivier, Richard III, one of three Shakespearean film scores by Walton. The music in Prelude to Richard III is not duplicated in A Shakespeare Suite from Richard III which follows next in sequence. Each piece is a complement to the other, and would be a perfect pair on a concert program.
