Third Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jager, Robert
Composed in 1966, this three movement work is performed regularly in contests and festivals as well as on concert band programs globally. The unique setting of this original work provides subtle challenges to the performers and conductor with enhanced interest for the listener. The movements are "March"-non-characteristically scored in alternating 4/4 and 3/4 time, "Waltz"-similarly juxtaposed in alternating 3/4 and 2/4 time, and the raucous "Rondo." Robert Jager's "Third Suite"-a distinctive work with charming character.Duration: 8:45

Clarinet Concerto (The Fallen) (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wilson, Jeffery
The three movements are 'Conflict', 'The Fallen' and 'Resolution', themes that are freely interpreted musically. In 'Conflict', the solo clarinet begins with an ascending figure based on octave leaps, while the accompaniment contrasts with marcato quavers and harsh dissonances. The melody features seventh intervals, and while the movement is marked 3/4 the accompaniment is often 6/8. This is more evident in the second theme where the clarinet line moves much more by step. The development takes these ideas and the cadenza comes from yet more conflict between the now calm clarinet and dissonant clashes in the accompaniment. 'The Fallen' is the slow movement and poignantly features notes from 'The Last Post' in the opening and a beautiful working of 'David of the White Rock' later on. The final movement 'Resolution' is a Rondo in 6/8, brighter but with hints of the initial conflict through the sevenths in the meno mosso sections which interrupt the flow. Another long cadenza takes short ideas from the piece before the work comes to a triumphant end with all four E notes across the whole range, echoing the beginning. Wilson set out to write a concerto for a versatile instrument and has found ways to exploit its capabilities while keeping tonal centre. There are frequent altissimo notes within all three movements. Wilson does use the very low notes, most notably in the cadenzas, but much of the work is high, presumably to allow the clarinet to carry over the wind band accompaniment. A good command of all notes right up to A sharp an octave above the stave is needed, plus technique to travel to and from altissimo notes (legato). The piece is around 25 minutes long. Printing is clear and the piano accompaniment comes as a spiral bound volume.

Ninth Symphony (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barnes, James
Premiered on 21 September, 2018 in Lawrence, Kansas by The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble (Dr. Paul Popiel, conducting), James Barnes' Ninth Symphony was composed between January and late June of that same year. This large work was commissioned by a consortium of twenty-one college bands, community bands, professional bands and individuals to help mark the 70th birthday of the composer (b. 1949). It is an expansive forty-minute work in four movements, of which the composer writes, "This is my last symphony...this work represents a compendium of all that I have learned during the fifty years of composing and scoring for this wonderful new medium: the modern wind band." The first movement, subtitled Elegy, is based around G minor. It is the longest movement of the symphony. Tragic and despondent in character, it is cast in sonata-allegro form. The second movement is entitled Scherzo. Barnes claims that "I have always wanted to write a waltz," and that is how this movement is cast, in a modified rondo form in D minor. In contrast to the mood of the first movement, the scherzo is a delightful posy of expansive melody, splashy color, humor and rhythm. The third movement, which is in a modified tertiary form, is entitled Night Music. In contrast to the scherzo, this movement begins with a mysterious incantation, first displayed by solo Alto Flute. The music becomes even darker and more mysterious, while overall the movement effectively expresses an "otherworldly" mood, ending with a solo soprano offstage which suddenly emerges, eerily singing a modified version of the opening incantation. Cast in sonata-allegro form, the fourth movement is most definitely a rousing Finale, beginning with a brilliant fanfare and undergoing several mood transformations before emerging into the final coda, ending the symphony with an energetic splash of color. Eine Kleine Klarinette Musik (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A solo for solo clarinet and band featuring the well-known tune from Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik. I have always thought that Woody Herman's Golden Wedding is a great showpiece for clarinet. He takes a tune entitled La Cinquantaine by the French Romantic composer Jean Gabriel-Marie (1852 - 1928) and sets it as a big band swing piece complete with Krupa Toms. In seeking to emulate it I suddenly realised that the Rondo from Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik K.525 had very much the same character if I presented it in a minor key. It was then really just a matter of organizing the various sections, setting them in a swing manner and adding a cadenza-like passage. There is, of course, a strong connection between Mozart and the clarinet. It was fun to write and will hopefully be a fun solo vehicle for clarinettists. - Rob Wiffin. Duration: 3.30
