Conducting the Music, Not the Musicians
Conducting the Music, Not the Musicians is the first conductor training text to put the primary emphasis on musical expression as it introduces basic technique through the concept of phrase conducting. Among many unique features it examines cueing within the beat pattern in greater detail than is usual in beginning conducting texts. The examples and exercises (drawn from both the vocal/choral and instrumental repertoires), progress to guided practice chorales and etudes and finally to full score rehearsal and guided performance. Jerry and Henry Nowak have produced a groundbreaking book that will help novice conductors solve technical problems, with musical solutions.

Memories of the Past - Satoshi Yagisawa
This beautiful chorale was commissioned by the Temasek Junior College Alumni Band from Singapore and is dedicated to its conductor, Mr. Lin Ah Leck, who sadly passed away in 2019. The music pays homage to Maestro Lin-sheng, as he was affectionately called by the band members. Mr. Lin, a devotee of Yagisawa's music, selected many of his works for their concerts.BRHaving visited Singapore many times, the composer has had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Lin and his band perform and was deeply moved by their expressive and warm performances, leading to him writing this chorale work about the 'eternal bond' between a teacher and his students. The world premiere of this piece in Singapore by the Temasek Junior College Alumni Band was titled Echoes of Temasek - In Memory of Meastro Lin-sheng. For this publication, it has been revised and retitled Memories of the Past.

La banda de los guajiros - Sverre Indris Joner
Guajira is both a term for a song form, where most people will recognize the song "Guajira Guantanamera," but also a Cuban word for farmer or fieldworker, as there are many of in the eastern Oriente province of Cuba where this rhythm originated. "La Banda de los guajiros" translates directly to "The Guajira Band."It is composed for wind orchestra by Sverre Indris Joner, who already in 1985 traveled to Cuba to learn the secrets of Caribbean music. The rhythms used in this piece are thoroughly explained in the textbook "Latinmusikkens ABC," which is also published by Noteservice/Norsk Musikkforlag. The piece uses traditional elements from Cuban music such as Guajira, Son Montuno, and Danzn, all falling under the genre of salsa. It is recommended that both conductor and percussionists familiarize themselves with the execution of the different rhythm patterns. Instruments like congas and timbales particularly have a range of different rhythm patterns. The role of the guiro instrument cannot be underestimated. Despite its seemingly simple content, it is the glue that holds everything together!

Himlen i min famn - Carola Häggkvist
"Heaven in My Arms" is a beautiful melody by Carola Hggkvist with lyrics by Erik Hillestad. This version is without vocal soloist so the melody is spread into many parts throughout the arrangement.(There are cue notes for oboe and bassoon, where they have soloistic elements.)To the conductor:Strive for good flow and phrasing. Feel free to be a bit creative with the phrasing. It invites for two-bar phrases in the melody, but perhaps 2/2/4 could also work nicely.Balance is very important. Often there is both melody and obligato/countermelody in addition to harmonic elements. Let each of them have their own layer in the balance.Staccato effects in clarinets and marimba are intended as pizzicato effects and must be phrased. Not too static. The tutti section at 72 can be energetic with intense lines. Maybe a little pi mosso as well. Think big and orchestral with good resonance and timbre.- Reid Gilje -

Centennium - Fredrick Schjelderup
"Centennium" was written for Lillestrm Skolekorps and their conductor Anders H. Halvorsen on the occasion of the band's centennial anniversary in 2023.The piece is based on a melodic theme that changes character, tempo, time signatures and harmony throughout the work, surrounded by train signals.Lillestrm got its train station as early as 1854, as part of the "Hovedbanen" from Oslo to Eidsvoll, Norway's first railway line. For many, the city of Lillestrm is known as a "train city," and thus the train signals are meant not only to illustrate the city's identity but also to symbolize the band's journey through its first 100 years.

Strilefunk - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
The piece was commissioned by the Norwegian Band Federation Hordaland and conductor Arvid Anthun for the 40th anniversary of Hordaland Youth Band in 2021. The piece is dedicated to Arvid Anthun.Several of our collaborations have focused on arranging and performing Norwegian folk music. This includes projects such as the one Manger Musikklag undertook in the late 90s, concerts, and recording sessions with Jlster Musikklag alongside the fiddler Sigmund Eiks, and now, for the anniversary concert of Hordaland Youth Band.Arvid desired folk music in a modern style. We discussed, among other things, Valter Aamodt's "Hordarapsodi," and he mentioned my Norwegian Dance, a funky piece where I incorporate a folk tune as a crucial element. Aamodt uses the melody "Eg rodde meg ut," or "Strilevise," as it is also known, in his rhapsody. The concept for Strilefunk was therefore to utilize one of the melodies Aamodt had used and additionally draw on the rhythmic experiences that we, as modern band musicians, bring from other genres.Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Juvavum Fanfare - Andreas Ziegelbäck
The Juvavum Fanfare was composed for the closing concert of the first part-time University course in Wind Orchestra Conducting at the renowned Mozarteum University Salzburg, which took place from 2019 to 2021 for the first time. This celebratory opening composition is dedicated to the esteemed course instructor and conductor, Martin Fuchsberger, as well as to all the graduates who successfully completed this program. The name of the fanfare, "Juvavum," derives from the ancient Roman name for Salzburg. This connection to Salzburg is not only evident in the premiere of the piece at the Mozarteum Salzburg but also in its musical depth. Thematically, the initial fanfare and subsequent lyrical section draw from the melody of Salzburg's regional anthem, "Land uns'rer Vter." The majestic fanfare echoes the opening intervals of this anthem. From bar 27 onward, a direct citation of the melodic theme can be heard. Both the fanfare motifs and the vocal lines of this anthem are eventually brought together in an exhilarating final section. The Juvavum Fanfare is ideally suited to ceremonially open concerts and provides an engaging experience for both listeners and musicians alike due to its appropriate length.
