Tortoises (From The Carnival of the Animals) - Camille Saint-Saƫns
Tortoises from "The Carnival of the Animals" is a brand new arrangement of this movement from the orchestral suite by Camille Saint-Sens.The slow and goofy turtle is given a hip-hop groove to speed up a bit but also face some competiton by afast rabbit, presented by the woodwind-section.This arrangement let the low brass play a slow, and veiled melody which are going to played a bit slower compared to the accompaniment. For the daredevil conductor, this piece can be akind of a "schizophrenic" exercise where one have to conduct the melody one and a half beat behind the accompaniment and rhythm group.

Rubies (After Thelonious Monk's Ruby, My Dear) - John Harbison
Composer John Harbison writes: 'Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's 'Ruby, My Dear', which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piecereflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then inthe grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.' Nexus - James Curnow
The word nexus is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-knowntheme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings - an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressiveballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. Dur: 6:00 (Recorded by the University of Alabama atBirmingham Wind Symphony - Dr. Sue Samuels, conductor. Christopher Watkins, trumpet soloist.)
