Annabel Lee (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Story, Michael

Scored in a lilting three-quarter meter, this delicious melody, by an unknown composer, was originally scored to accompany Edgar Allan Poe's poem of the same name. The story is of the narrator's deep love for a woman who lived by the sea, and whose untimely death is mourned every night by the narrator as he sleeps next to her tomb by the ocean. The beautiful melody, charismatically harmonized, musically depicts that undying love and provides a meaningful opportunity to teach expressive and lyrical performance.Duration: 2:15

The Sun Will Rise Again (Concert Band - Score & Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan. I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title to honour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun. I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.- Philip SparkeDuration: 4:30

Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) was a well-known Russian composer, particularly for his opera, Prince Igor. Borodin was in the middle of composing the piece when he suddenly died. Rimsky-Korsakov and another Russian composer, Alexander Glazanov, completed the unfinished score and the opera had its debut in November of 1890, three and a half years after his death. During the overture prelude, a beautiful flowing melody from Act III, entitled Andante, is an emotional addition to the young band literature. Most musical!Duration: 3.00

Pie Jesu (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Faure, Gabriel - Beringen, Robert van

Pie Jesu is the famous aria for soprano and orchestra from Gabriel Faur's Requiem, opus 48. Faur (1845- 1924) composed the work in 1887, two years after his father's death and only a short time before his mother passed away. Faur's Pie Jesu is richly atmosphere and peaceful, and Robert van Beringen perfectly captures the essence of Faur's beautiful music in this arrangement for concert band.Duration: 3:30

A Jamestown Trilogy (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fagan, Gary

A Jamestown Trilogy is a three-movement suite inspired by the story of Captain John Smith and his crew, who sailed from England on December 20, 1606 in three small ships, the Discovery, Susan Constant and Godspeed. They first landed at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607 and then sailed up the James River where, on May 14, 1607, they landed on a site they named Jamestown. In 1608, Smith was captured by the Powhatan Indians. Legend has it that he was considered a threat to the Indians because of his interest in metals and in searching for a waterway west. Smith was sentenced to death and placed on a stone alter to be killed when a twelve year old Indian Princess rescued him. Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas (Playful One), the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the confederacy, threw her body across Smith's and saved his life.Duration: 5.30
