Desert Caravan - Larry Neeck
Imagine an oasis in the desert. Far in the distance a caravan is sighted. The air is filled with excitement and anticipation, the quiet desert becoming louder and more animated as the large caravan approaches and passes. This scene is musically depicted in Larry Neeck's "Desert Caravan," which provides numerous opportunities for your band to work with melody, dynamics, and drama. Transport your audience to a faraway place, as the sounds of the camels and their herdsman slowly die away, and the caravan fades into the distance. A delightful musical journey!

Desert Dances - Philip Sparke
Henderson is a city in Clark County, Nevada, just southeast of Las Vegas and surrounded by desert: this was the inspiration for the title. Desert Dances opens with a lively introduction, mostly in 3/4, which pervades the faster sections of the piece. This subsides to introduce a slower dance which expands to a full-band climax. The introduction soon returns and leads to the main theme of the piece, a waltz-like melody played by the full ensemble. A short bridge passage follows, which leads to a legato central theme. This is played twice and heralds the return of the main theme and a short coda which closes the work. An imaginative work for concert or contest with nice featuresthroughout all groups of the band.

Ancient Desert Drone - Henry Cowell
Ancient Desert Drone was composed for Orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch drone throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The ImmovableDo) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. This transcription for bandis an exotic and welcome addition to the repertoire for Winds. Dur: 5:00Recorded by the Trinity University Symphonic Wind Ensemble - James Worman, conductor.
