This piece was composed as a birthday present for the Austrian conductor Walter Rescheneder to acknowledge the strong support he has given to the composer, Thomas Doss. Doss drew the inspiration for this fanfare from a mountain hike in the Salzkammergut. A powerful fanfare reveals enthusiasm and triumph. It is an exulting feeling and gives boundless freedom to look down into the depths from high up giving a view of the stunning landscape. Symphony No.2 contains four movements and a coda, all played without a break, following the traditional symphonic pattern. The Introduction presents the main thematic material of the piece which is characterized by rising and falling 5ths a semitone apart. The Quaver Machine has a repeated, relentless constant quaver pulse from the vibraphone. The harmony circles around only 3 chords and the section builds with more and more instruments being played in harmony and in canon. A shift in tonality gradually leads to Adagio, an almost opulently romantic presentation of the main theme with a rippling accompaniment. After a massive climax, the music leads to Finale with the main theme presented as an Ostinato gradually introducing the full band to another large climax. Gradually, everything quietens down for the Coda, a varied repetition of the Introduction but ending with a last reminiscence of the Adagio. Duration: 14 mins.

Series: New Sounds in Brass (NSB); Duration: approx.8'50"; Composed by Joe Hisaishi; Arranged by Takashi Hoshide. Arranger Takashi Hoshide says, "I have selected beautiful melodies from the soundtrack of 'Princess Mononoke' (1997, directed by Hayao Miyazaki) and arranged them into a medley. What can be said about these songs as a whole is that they combine a grand continental scale with the delicacy that reflects Japanese emotions. Since there are no upbeat songs in this selection, I had to work hard on the arrangement, but this allowed for creating contrasts and transitions between each scene in the performance. 'Ashitaka Sekki (English title: The Legend of Ashitaka)' - 'Sekki' means a story that is not recorded but passed down orally. In this anime, this can be considered a sub-main theme. The song starts with a feeling that the story is about to begin and, once the theme kicks in, aim for a grand performance to convey its scale. 'Encounter' - This is the music that plays during the scene where the protagonist Ashitaka meets San. Interestingly, the motif of the main theme 'Princess Mononoke' is used in this melody. Here, let's pursue the shifts in the timbre of individual phrases, creating a beautiful and aesthetic soundscape. 'Princess Mononoke' - This is the main title of the anime. The melody line is carried by horns and trumpets."

The Norwegian Roald Amundsen had actually been planning an expedition to the Arctic for a long time. But at the beginning of September 1909, two other adventurers announced that they had already reached the Pole: Frederick Cook and Robert Edwin Peary. Amundsen changed his mind - if he could no longer be the first man at the North Pole, he at least wanted to be the first to set foot on the South Pole. On 7 June 1910, Amundsen set off on an Antarctic expedition that went down in the annals of history.

£118.99North Hills Fantasy - Philip Sparke
North Hills Fantasy was commissioned by the North Hills High School Bands, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (director: Len Lavelle) as part of a commissioning programme that has run since 1965 - the longest of its kind in the USA. The work opens with a reflective, unaccompanied solo for alto saxophone which develops into a chorale for horns and saxes. This is taken up by the trumpets and subsides to a change of key and mood, with highly decorated folk-like solos for clarinet, bassoon and saxes. These solos build to a climax for full band, which heralds a triumphant return of the horn chorale, accompanied by florid woodwind figuration. But the mood soon winds down; fragments of earlier melodies return calmly to peacefully close the work.
