Ziggurat - Wouter Lenaerts
The Tower of Babel was built in 1563 and is the best-known masterpiece of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1520-1569). The step-like temple tower or ziggurat was an important meeting place for people from different continents and cultures. However, its spiritual meaning is even more important as this tower was considered to be the gate to heaven - the gate dividing two worlds. This work creates a musical connection between these two worlds. As sources of inspiration, the composer used the Luther chorale 'Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein' (Oh God, Look Down from Heaven, 1524), the legendary King Nimrod and the painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder, whose initials form the basis of oneof the themes.

First Light - Steven Bryant
The title First Light refers to the arrival of dawn - specifically the composer's experience of dawn in the mountains surrounding Lake Garda in northern Italy. There, the light of the sun arrives in distinct stages: the night sky begins to brighten quite early, though the sun remains hidden behind the mountains for several hours. Abruptly, the first direct ray of sunlight crests the mountaintop, bringing with it intense, palpable heat. The town below, nestled in the narrow space between the water's edge and the steep mountain slope, remains in darkness for a while longer, until the sun ultimately sends light cascading down the mountainside, illuminating everything. The title is "Continental Divide" and it has nothing to do with tectonic plates, but is another word for "Watershed". It is the place where the the water flows in opposite directions. For example, when you drive up a mountain, the water flows downwards, the same does it when you drive down the other side. On top there is usually a water, and it is in this water, or musical idea if you like, that it is a continental divide. What I intend is that in this piece there are some musical motifs that change character and direction. They can be in the foreground and carry the play, or they may be in the background as a countermeasure. It can also be from horizontal lines to vertical. Orrhythmical patterns that dont find their match until far into the piece.

Centrifuge was written for the 2015 Southeastern Louisiana Middle School Band Camp and its director, Paul Frechou. This piece portrays the a centrifuge vigorously spinning with no sign of slowing down or stopping. An allegro tempo is used to fuel the drive and impetus throughout this energetic musical depiction of a whirling perpetual motion dynamo. The opening theme is first presented by clarinets playing in their lowest register as the machine starts up and begins to build up speed. Underlying the entire work is a pulsating percussion section which provides the thrust and forward motion along with various syncopated rhythms contributed by the winds.

A sirocco is a Mediterranean wind that originates in the Sahara Desert, capable of reaching hurricane velocities. This piece reflects the changing nature of this dry wind; it starts with a brief and violent flurry, then settles down, depicting the still, hot desert morning. As the desert comes to life, the music evolves into a 6/8 world-music groove, enhanced by colorful percussion effects. Building and growing in intensity, the raging sandstorm powers over the landscape to a climactic close.
