Gifted Leadership (March) - Henry Fillmore
Gifted Leadership is a most interesting march with some unique scoring that sets it apart from many more ordinary marches. The woodwind parts are especially intriguing, with much more variety and independence than is frequently found in a traditional march. Festive Dances - Robert Thurston
Robert Thurston's enormously attractive writing for band and his sure command of contemporary harmonic and rhythmic devices give this three movement composition by terrific band and audience appeal. Uncle Henry - Howard E. Akers
Uncle Henry was the nickname given to Henry Fillmore around the state of Florida by band directors and band students for all that he did to raise the standard of bands in the state. Howard Akers pays tribute to Henry with this stellar march that was originally published one year After Fillmore's death in 1957. Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.
