Voyage With The VOC follows the route of a ship (first movement) on a visit to the Rajah of Yogakarta (second movement) to load up the ship before returning home (third movement). "Yamanobe no Michi" (road at the foot of a mountain) is located east of the Yamato basin. It is the oldest road in Japan and is about 35km (21.5 miles) long. The oldest market and positions used for trading merchandise over the centuries are found along this road. While composing this work the composer visualised the activity along "Yamanobe no Michi" imagining the solemn procession of the aristocracy, as well as the chaos that traffic often presents. He also kept in mind the tumultuous history that this road has seen and still represents today. 0:06:00

£104.00A Future Celebration - Kevin Houben
Future Celebration was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Royal Socialist Wind Band 'De Toekomst' from Sint-Niklaas (Belgium). In this colourful compostion Kevin Houben succeeds in evoking the bustling textile and cigar industry of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this East Flemish city Sint-Niklaas.After all, these crafts were characteristic for the wealth they brought to the city. Still testimony of this are the 2 unique (niche)museums in Sint-Niklaas: the Knitwear museum and the Pipe and Tobacco museum. Even in times of great crises eg. during the Interbellum the city continued flourishing proving the unique collection of classified art deco houses, amongst others the former People's House, in which the Royal Socialist Wind Band still rehearse.This historic background of Sint-Niklaas and of the Wind Band in particular has been musically presented by Kevin Houben in Future Celebration. The brief, but energetic and powerful opening of the work by the brass instruments gives musical expression to Sint-Niklaas as a prosperous city. After the presentation of a majestic and lyrical theme by the woodwinds an allegro with a cheerful theme takes a look at the future, hopefully looking at the next milestones/ celebrations the city and its orchestra are still expecting in the future.

The railway between Oslo and Bergen, "Bergensbanen", was built in the years 1895 1909. This piece is dedicated to the railway labourers, the navvies, who did the hard work across the mountains. Most of the work, even in the tunnels, were done by hand. The official opening of the railway was in 1909, but there was also a celebration and a dynamite salute when the two teams of labourers and locomotives from East and West met in the mountains in October 1907. At this point, the rails were joined together with a joint in the national colours: "The Junction Point"!

The Spell is a musical interpretation of an old legend from the Alpstein, a mystical mountain area in the east of Switzerland. According to the tale, a shepherd boy, Hennes, cared for his animals on the alpine pastures, but many of the animals fell ill with a terrible plague and died. The mountain spirit appeared to Hennes out of the mists of Sntis and so the story unfolds... The music of The Spell follows the narrative of this legend, in which musical motifs are assigned to the essential elements of the story, a technique seen in late romantic repertoire by composers such as Wagner or Richard Strauss.

Featuring music celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Ramadan, "A World Holiday Celebration" is a unique medley for the concert band. Programmable in any educational setting, the arrangement features melody and ethnic percussion from multiple cultures celebrating the holiday season. Beginning with an introduction based on "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", the arrangement continues with a setting of "Oh Hanukkah" featuring the saxophones. "Sounds of Ramadan" follows representing cultures of the middle east. An African percussion ensemble serves as the accompaniment for Kwanzaa, a chant featuring the seven principles of the holiday celebration. The winds return with "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" as the entire percussion section continues to a very exciting finish. This is the perfect ending for your holiday concert as your ensemble brings together the entire community in celebration.

A Child's Embrace - Charles Young
A Child's Embrace was written to commemorate the birth of the composer's first child, Katherine Anne Young, who was born on January 18, 2000. It has been scored in such a way as to permit performances by bands with less than complete instrumentation. (The oboe and bassoon parts may be omitted if players are not available, and the vibraphone part may be substituted by bells with rubber mallets.) It was commissioned by the Traverse City East Junior High School Band.
