Speedway! - Mark Lortz
Commissioned by and dedicated to the Folly Quarter Middle School Band in Ellicott City, Maryland, Andrew Sprang, conductor. This highly programmatic piece gives you a front-row seat in the viewing stands as it depicts a high-speed car race. The opening section starts the engines, sets the pole position, and then the race is on. The action slows briefly for a caution flag, and then its full throttle as the race resumes with a wild dash to the finish line, closing with a triumphant victory lap.

The Flame of Fortitude - Mark Lortz
In 1884, a locomotive tossed a spark that stated a fire that reduced the town of Milton, Pennsylvania to ashes. A majestic fanfare depicts the vibrant town with train whistles in the flutes, train bells in the chimes, whirling engines in the brass, and telegraphs in woodwinds and mallets. Growing dissonances depict the fierce firestorm that abruptly dissolves into a solemn oboe solo of the towns sadness, while paper bags and plastic water bottles represent the smoldering fire. The music then turns from sorrow to hope as small sections of the schools alma mater embed the message of hope and optimism before the rousing and triumphant coda.

Tognum Power - Jerker Johansson
The German engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, which long has had its own Concert Band, in 2006 became part of Tognum AG, which commissioned Tognum Power in 2009. That both companies produce powerful engines naturally was a heavy influence on a piece for Concert Band, which indeed is a most powerful type of ensemble. The character of the piece is heroic, alternating between lyrical and dramatic sections. Tognum Power was premiered in Friedrichshafen on April 12, 2009, by the MTU Orchestra (MTU-Blserensemble) under Reiner Hobe.

Take Off - Daniel Weinberger
You take your place in an aeroplane and wait expectantly for the motors to spark into life and for the plane to taxi onto the runway. Then it's full throttle and with a roar of the engines you leave everything behind you. Below, the world is in miniature, you thrill at the freedom of flying high and take in the spectacular drama of the clouds. It's moments such as these that Daniel Weinberger has captured in music in Take Off.
