    The Holly and the Ivy

Adorn your holiday concerts with this charming new setting of a familiar English carol. To open, we hear a jubilant proclamation leading to a presentation of the melody in 4/4 by the trumpets, supported with clarinets and light percussion. Soon, the low brass revels in the theme while the woodwinds festoon and decorate. Spirits are lifted with a change of key until we are gradually transported to a gentle variation in 3/4 where all is calm. It isn't long before we hear the exuberant melody again and all is brought to a joyous conclusion. You'll be programming this one for years to come.

I'm Seventeen Come Sunday - Percy Aldridge Grainger / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

Australian-born Percy Grainger developed into one of the most sensationally successful concert pianists of the early 1900s. As a composer and arranger, he is perhaps best known for his work with folk music. Number eight in Grainger's British Folk-Music Settings series, "I'm Seventeen Come Sunday" is actually an amalgam of two English folk songs -- the main tune collected by Grainger in 1905, from Lincolnshire, and a variant of a tune collected by Cecil J. Sharp in 1912, from Sumerset. Welcome Douglas Wagner's sensitive setting of one of Grainger's best-known works. (3:00)

    Appalachian Dreams - Roland Barrett

Based on material borrowed from two English folk songs that were popular in the Southern Appalachians during the early years of American history---"Going to Boston" and "Soldier, Won't You Marry Me?". After a very peaceful and tranquil opening, a bold, powerful statement leads to a dreamlike, mesmerizing section. With a powerful percussion contribution, the driving conclusion resounds. An epic work, this is a striking addition to symphonic band literature. (4:45)

    Early One Morning

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. This folk song is particularly notable for its use in a number of well known folk-song arrangements including one by the English composer Benjamin Britten. It is peaceful and reflective with interesting parts for all. There are sections of melody for all voices. This is a great piece for developing lyrical ensemble playing. (2:55)
