Traveler
David Maslanka's Traveler, for Symphonic Wind ensemble, was commissioned in 2003 by the University of Texas at Arlington Band Alumni Association, the Delta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Gamma Nu Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, in honor of the career contributions of Ray C. Lichtenwalter, retiring Director of bands at UT Arlington. Maslanka writes, "Ray has been a close friend and champion of my music for many years, and it was a great pleasure for me to write this piece for his final concert. The idea for Traveler came from the feeling of a big life movement as I contemplated my friend's retirement." Carl Fischer Music is excited to make this beautifully contemplative piece available to wind ensembles everywhere.

Aspirations
Aspirations is written for the youngest and least experienced of musicians, who have only had a short time on their instruments. This piece uses minimal material, including no more than two repeated eighth notes as the most difficult rhythm. It contains bold fanfare gestures, marcato melodic material, and a contrasting legato theme. Every section of the ensemble is featured in this surprisingly sophisticated, yet very attainable piece.

Tides - Bill Calhoun
"Tides" calls to comparison the currents of the sea and our own human emotions. The piece is the perfect vehicle for younger groups to refine their ensemble playing skills. Filled with emotion, "Tides" provides the ingredients necessary for contrast in any concert program.

Bridges
From its commanding opening phrase, Bridges sets a regal tone in an Americana style as the full ensemble plays the introduction with power and energy. The work creates contrast with more staccato, dance-like articulations but the piece always returns to the strong opening material. It is signature Alan Lee Silva at his best!

Castlebay
This fresh new setting of two traditional Scottish folk songs, Will Ye No Come Back Again and Keel Row, was written in honor of its namesake, the Scottish village Castlebay. Composer Gene Milford has crafted a well-scored offering for contest/festival performance that is reminiscent of English-style band pieces. After the striking opening, the piece moves to the more fiddle-like Keel Row in a lilting 6/8. All of the sections of the ensemble get to shine and the band will sound formidable with this piece.

Japanese Pictures
Japanese Pictures draws inspiration from both traditional and modern Japanese music. The harmonies are western as suggested by the accompanying melodies, and the percussion is styled to give the sounds of a taiko drum ensemble. Young bands will find this piece intriguing and different. Use this work as part of your multi-cultural approach to teaching music appreciation. Also a good choice for contest or festival performance.
