£141.99Pulcinella (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke's series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell'arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close. Duration: 6.45

The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically, with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist, Steven Mead. This three-movement concerto (Allegro con brio, Espressivo and Vivacissimo) was commissioned by the famous Japanese euphonium player Tamao Araki. It demands a high level of instrumental proficiency from the soloist, while the accompaniment is less demanding and accessible for a band of an average level. While composing Serenata, Jan Van der Roost didn't focus too much on virtuosity, acrobatics or spectacle. Instead, he wanted to let the solo instrument shine as a melodic and expressive voice. And indeed: the warm sound of the euphonium touches the heart of the audience straight away in the first section with a melodious theme. Then follows a rigaudon, a noble and elegant dance from the Renaissance era. Despite the fact that some of the variations on the main theme require some technique and agility, the overall character mostly remains songful. The composition as a whole builds further on these two musical ingredients, but thanks to a clever alternation of melodic and technical passages, it offers a nice stylistic diversity to the listeners. The band is definitely not 'just accompanying' but fully participates and begins a dialogue with the soloist: both musical partners have their say. The end is more spectacular and sonorous, giving an extra boost of energy to the soloist as well as the band in a grand finale!Duration: 12.00

The Shamadan is an old oriental folk dance full of symbolism in which a female dancer, often on the occasion of a wedding, balances a candelabra on her head as a token of spiritual light. In this work, the euphonium takes up the role of the dancer. At the very beginning, the soloist already has the opportunity to shine in an unaccompanied recitative. Next, the soloist and band alternate, and in the course of the work the band also plays an important part with various technical highlights. More variation is created with a solo passage accompanied by percussion and hand claps, culminating beautifully in a grand tutti towards the end of the piece. Challenging music with much to enjoy! This work was commissioned by the Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist, Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer, who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence. The solo part can also be performed on euphonium or alto saxophone.
