Bernstein's Mass is a monumental 90-minute work, written in 1971 for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the Siena Wind Orchestra. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy one tone fanfare. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C, D, E flat, B (or C flat). This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skilful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen.Duration: 3:35

Written in 1920-21, the Prelude and Fugue in C Minor was published in 1930, appearing both as an orchestral work and as an organ piece. The ritornello-form first movement calls to mind the Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV546 of J S Bach. The fugue is in A-B-A form and based on a subject whose pentatonic outline seems like an augury of gentle pastoralism; but both movements display a gritty, truculent brand of counterpoint that anticipates the dissonance and fury of Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 4 in F minor, the composition of which spanned the years 1931-4. (from notes by Relf Clark, 2009). The power and drama of this piece is captured in this faithful arrangement for Concert Band.
