Commissioned by the Military Wives Choirs to commemorate the centenary of 1918, the end of the First World War. The Military Band Accompaniment is available separately - NOV167387To mark the centenary of the end of World War I, the Military Wives Choirs - 69 choirs from across Britain and abroad - commissioned Owain to write a piece for their album, 'Remember'. The text for Owain's work, 'The Poppy Red', is inspired by the 1918 poem 'We Shall Keep The Faith' by Moina Michael, itself inspired by John McCrae's 'In Flanders Fields'. The recording brought together 1105 voices with The Band of the Household Cavalry, conducted by Hilary Davan Wetton.

"In Flanders Fields" is a play recounting the Battle of Vimy Ridge (France) which took place from April 9 to 12, 1917. The introduction refers to the thousands of graves found at the site of Notre-Dame de Lorette. Then begins the episode of preparation and fierce battle. Thanks to the Canadian Expeditionary Force that came as reinforcements, the battle was won and the site secured at 6 a.m. (brass choir accompanied by 6 bells). The title of this work also refers to a poem by John Mac Rae located at the entrance to the memorial museum."In Flanders Fields"By Col. "All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood." This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first 'Cry for Freedom' it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement 'Dream of Freedom' takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale 'Freedom Above All' refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. This movement should be seen first and foremost as an affirmation of life, faith and hope for a better world.

This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff's work are present. This four movement piece is an epic symphonic poem-like work with an incredible expressiveness and is ideal for a thematic concert or a contest.
