Snowdonia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Glyn, Gareth - Noble, Paul
From the composer's home on Anglesey, the magnificent mountain range of Eryri ('abode of the eagles'), known as Snowdonia in English, can be seen clearly, and it is this fine view that spurred him to compose this tone-poem. Just as the mountains change from season to season, and the view alters as one climbs the slopes, there are several distinct and contrasting sections to the piece itself. First we hear the bustle and excitement of the area in summer, as tourists flock to the foot of Snowdon; then an impression of the confident striding of those setting off to climb. After a brisk climax, the codetta to the energetic theme becomes the basis of a new, folk-like, idea which develops into a majestic anthem suggesting the grandeur of the mountain-range. The famous little train of Snowdon is brought to mind by a repetitive, mechanical idea which leads to a section combining both the main themes of excitement and grandeur, and to a powerful climax. Then, after a moment of silence, the atmosphere changes completely. Here is the ineffable solitude - and timeless beauty - of Snowdonia; but from the cellos (saxophone) we soon hear the folk-like theme slowly re-asserting itself, resolving into a peremptory fanfare which leads back to the opening mood and a return of the opening theme. But the final word is given to the 'solitude' motive, now transformed into a resolute chorale representing the eternal permanence of these extraordinary mountains.

Kiskiminetas (To Make Daylight) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Murtha, Paul
Kiskiminetas is a Native American word that means to make daylight and was likely a command given to break camp and continue the journey. Paul Murtha's escriptive work for young players opens with a noble fanfare suggesting the break of day. A lyric section follows depicting scenic vistas along the path, and finally an exuberant adventure theme celebrates the conclusion of the journey. Nicely paced with plenty of variety.

Phoenix Rising (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A brilliant overture reflecting the strength and renewal of the phoenix. The phoenix symbolises transformation, death and rebirth in its fire and this overture starts with great positivity as the main 'phoenix' figure is stated. The brass pronounces its emphatic fanfare intertwined with the spiralling woodwind figures and then the music bursts into an energetic fast tempo. There are contrasting darker episodes and a lyrical middle section before the phoenix finally re-emerges triumphant.Duration: 7.30

Grandeur and Glory (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
Every now and again I feel the impulse to return to my ceremonial background from my time in the RAF. Grandeur and Glory is one of those pieces that suits those occasions when pomp and circumstance is required. It starts and ends with a slow-building fanfare in the style of Handel's Zadok the Priest. These sections flank a jaunty tune which is flavoured by a few lateral harmonic twists. - Rob Wiffin. Duration: 3.15

Symphony for Wind Ensemble (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stephenson, James M.
The symphony is in four movements. The first movement starts a single triangle note, followed by a guitar strum. The movement anxiously attempts to churn into action, only to be stifled repeatedly by the single triangle note. Finally, with the guitar as inspiration, the main theme gets under way, revealing an almost Spanish, or even Eastern European flavor. Ideas and themes get reworked, developed, repeated and augmented throughout the movement, before finally closing out just as it began, but in reverse: this time guitar followed by triangle. The second movement steals from an angular and shrieking motif of the first, but is presented in opposite fashion: with the warm blend of the low brass. Hints of iconic military symbolism are interspersed throughout this movement, as homage to the commissioning ensemble. The main theme is inverted and awarded to a solo trumpet midway before giving way to a brass fanfare, though not done loudly, but here muted, from afar. The low brass return at the end, fading away to nothing as the bell tolls. The third movement is merely a short interlude - a break, in almost Gershwin-like fashion - from the seriousness of the movements that precede and follow. Lastly, the fourth movement is a wild one: with mixed meters and plentiful percussion penned to propel the movement throughout. The movements' themes are all reworkings of material presented earlier.
