Salute to a Hero was composed to honour the work of a truly deserving musician, teacher, and conductor. It opens with a noble brass fanfare with woodwind ornamentation. Following a short interlude the opening fanfare is again heard this time being played by the full band. A lyrical middle section follows, providing a beautiful and peaceful contrast to the powerful sound of the brass section. The fanfare makes one final appearance bringing the work to a triumphant close.

The work opens with a stern fanfare in bare fifths, which leads to a cantabile theme introduced by alto saxophone. This builds to a climax and reintroduces the fanfare, which slowly evolves into the subsequent vivo. A perky tune emerges on flute, saxophone and trumpet, which, after a short bridge passage, leads to a contrasting melody on low clarinets and saxophones. After some development a true 'second subject' appears for the whole band. A recapitulation leads briefly back to the opening fanfare before the vivo returns to close the work in celebratory mood.

The concert is given annually in London by the musicians of the Household Division (Guards) of the Army, renowned for the splendour of their uniforms. The piece is intentionally energetic, vivacious and brilliant in style, seeking to capture the sparkle of gold in the uniforms with a few strong and majestic seams of scarlet underpinning the texture. There are no specific military connotations in the music and the piece is a dynamic concert opener for any programme. Festival Prelude 'Ad Excel' was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for 'to excel' but also celebrates the band's anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close. Duration: 5.00

Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida's involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work. Duration: 6.45

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. A tuneful and reasonably easy suite, comprising Fanfare, Lullaby and All at Sixes and Sevens. There are some asymmetric rhythmic challenges in the last movement as implied in its title, but otherwise this suite is not particularly difficult and sets out to be attractive throughout. The Fanfare is vibrant and energetic while Lullaby is very lyrical and occasionally punctuated by harmonic piquancy. All at Sixes and Sevens plays games between 3/4 and 6/8 with some sevens thrown in for good measure.Duration: 8.45
