Frida's Whiskers Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
David Well composed 'Frida's Whiskers' in commemoration of his own cat, who met an untimely end. Frida (whose real name was 'Godefrida van Coopersburg thoe Nieuwenhuys') was a lively creature, who led a playful and uncomplicated life. She used to sleep in her basket for hours, but when she woke up she upset the entire house and its furnishing. Curtains were inspected from top to bottom and flower pots fell from window-sills just like that! Outside, in the open air she was in her element. She used to frolic, bouncing into the air. After such playful moods she would return to her basket tired but satisfied where, being the cleanly cat that she was, she subjected her entire body, whiskers included, to a thorough wash. 04:30

The Graces of Love - Oliver Waespi
"The Graces of Love" (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milanese court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune 'Il bianco fior' (The White Flower) on which the first movement of Oliver Waespi's piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune 'Vaghe bellezze ...' (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied anddeveloped. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. It brings the work to a close with a hypnotic rhythm which is noble and virtuosic at the same time.

Heliotrope Bouquet - Scott Joplin
This ragtime masterpiece was composed in 1907 and is named after the beautiful variegated southern flower. What makes this particular work stand out from other ragtime pieces is the oddity of its structure, rhythm, and melody, which could be the result of the collaboration of these two composers. The first two strains were written by Louis Chauvin, a brilliant young pianist from St. Louis, and the last two strains were composed by the master, Scott Joplin. A truly unique and appealing ragtime work.

Ivanhoe - Elliot Del Borgo
A grand and sweeping panorama that calls up days-of-yore when knighthood was in flower, Ivanhoe, suggested by the celebrated novel of Sir Walter Scott, is a powerful and impressive tone poem for band. As usual with Del Borgo, the scoring is colorful and contrapuntal, with especially fine use of a large percussion section, and the employment of a wide, but accessible, harmonic palette. Duration: 4'30"

Song for Sakiko - Bert Appermont
Bert Appermont composed Song for Sakiko during a stay in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo. "Sakiko" roughly translated means "flower child" and is associated with a dreamy, poetic atmosphere. Appermont used theseassociations as a starting point while composing. Song for Sakiko starts with a very lyrical theme based on a minor third that forms the basis for the entire work. A second theme builds up to the grand finale, which repeats the theme, but in amajor key and the music slowly fades away, like ripples on a pond, as both themes can be heard dissipating into nothingness.
