£75.00Cotswold Dances 4. Cleve Idyll (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)

The opening strains are folk-like in nature with underlying modal harmonies, while the stately trio is reminiscent of the processional style of Elgar and other British composers. A Jamestown Trilogy is a three-movement suite inspired by the story of Captain John Smith and his crew, who sailed from England on December 20, 1606 in three small ships, the Discovery, Susan Constant and Godspeed. They first landed at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607 and then sailed up the James River where, on May 14, 1607, they landed on a site they named Jamestown.In 1608, Smith was captured by the Powhatan Indians. Legend has it that he was considered a threat to the Indians because of his interest in metals and in searching for a waterway west. Smith was sentenced to death and placed on a stone alter to be killed when a twelve year old Indian Princess rescued him. Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas (Playful One), the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the confederacy, threw her body across Smith's and saved his life.Duration: 5.30

The Music of Queen and Genesis.Gilbert Tinner combined a number of hits by the well-known British rock group Queen - and a song by Genesis, also a rock formation from England - to form an exciting arrangement with the telling title Symphonic Rock. The instrumentation can indeed be called symphonic, but important instruments from pop music are also present. For instance, an important role is played by the electric guitar, and a synthesizer is used as well. The White Rose was commissioned by the White Rose Concert Band from Harrogate, England. The band takes its name from the county symbol of Yorkshire, the white rose. This partly rhythmic, party lyrical piece opens with a flourish from the trumpets.
