Handel in the Strand - Percy Aldridge Grainger / transcr. Thomas P. Rohrer
This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. (3:35)

Funeral March - Edvard Grieg / arr. Jan Erickson, Fennell Frederick
Written in 1866 the day he heard his good friend and Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak died, the original monument to the memory of his dear friend was composed by Edvard Grieg for piano. One year later, Grieg arranged the work for military band, transposing it to g minor, and he so treasured this music that he carried it with him on all journeys, and the orchestra setting was played at his interment. This transcription for the contemporary wind ensemble was made, appropriately, by the Norwegian band enthusiast and authority Jan Ericksen and edited by famed band master Frederick Fennell.

Engelberg Variations - William G. Harbinson
Engelberg Variations was composed for the Hibriten High School Band in Lenoir, North Carolina and is based on the hymn, "When In Our Music God Is Glorified." It opens with a flourish of activity from the brass and percussion. This gives way to the statement of the theme set in a lovely woodwind chorale featuring flutes and oboes. A lyrical trumpet solo takes the band to a soaring tutti statement of the theme which gets interrupted by a percussion-filled staccato variation. Fragments of the theme are then heard in fun variations juxtaposed against the original theme in augmentation. is destined to become a classic!
