£194.99The Year 1941 - Serge Prokofieff
The Year 1941 was composed during the second World War. Prokofiev, along with other composers, was evacuated to the Caucasus when Germany started attacking the Soviet Union in 1941. It was under such circumstances that Prokofiev began work on this symphonic suite. He was working on his epic opera War and Peace and the String Quartet No. 2 at the same time. It is an orchestral suite in three movements, a poignant and evocative musical depiction of a tumultuous period in history. The composer described these three movements as follows: I. In Battle - "a scene of heated battle, heard by the audience sometimes as though far away and sometimes as though on the actual battlefield."II. At Night - "a poetic night scene, disturbed by the tension of impending conflict. III. For the Brotherhood of Man - "a triumphant lyrical hymn to victory and the brotherhood of peoples."

Thomas Doss has depicted the legend of the knight Maldix vom Litermont, a fierce hunter and an excessive drinker who, despite the warnings of his mother, was killed during a driven hunt in the woods, in a magnificent way. With the portrayal of various characters, the work offers a lot of variation.

Black Gold was commissioned by Musikverein 1891 "Harmonie" Saarwellingen e.V. (Germany) to mark its 130th anniversary. This composition pictures the history of the mining industry in the town of Saarwellingen and its surrounding region, where the life of the miners as well as their families revolved around coal, or black gold, for centuries on end. The piece is based on motifs from the famous song "Glck auf, Glck auf, der Steiger kommt..." ("Good luck, good luck, the mining foreman comes"), a veritable anthem for miners the world over.

The composition opens with a powerful rhythmic motif, which soon develops into the main theme of this brisk overture. The unwavering, joyful melodies and a positive atmosphere give the work a high-spirited energy. The strong pulse has the music firmly in its grasp and only quietens gradually in a pensive middle movement that seems to emanate from another world. This atmospheric passage can evoke dreamy thoughts and a variety of visions. But then the liveliness of the previous motifs returns, to take us back to the vivacious here and now, full of optimism and determination for the hundred years to come. On to a wonderful future!
