SURPRISE SYMPHONY, The (Simply Classics Concert Band) - Burton, Denis
Franz Joseph Haydn, a prolific composer, wrote over 100 symphonies. Many of these symphonies had nicknames, including 'The Drum Roll', The Military', and this, No.94, 'The Surprise'. History tells us that Haydn, wearied of audiences losing attention at his concerts, wrote in a 'surpirse', in the second, tranquil, movement with a sudden loud chord. No doubt Haydn held the audience's attention through the rest of the performance! American Grade 1 Duration 0:44

Treason and Plot (from 'For England, Harry and St. George') (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gorb, Adam
The little pieces that form 'For England, Harry and St. George' may be played individually, in pairs, scattered through a programme or, when given complete, may even be played in a different order. All take their inspiration from the music of mediaeval and renaissance Britain, the scene of political intrigue, social turmoil and military strife. Performers should keep in mind the combination of vigour, mysticism and grandeur which so characterised English music of this bygone age. AB grade 1.5Duration: 02:00

A contrasting moment of calm transitions to the exciting return of the opening theme, followed by triumphant closing material. Written squarely for Grade 1 players but with an attractive, mature sound that belies its level, , by Scott Watson, would make the perfect concert opener or closer. (2:30) Correlates to , Level 5.

In the Pocket - Larry McKenna
Kids love to sound cool. At the Grade 1 level, though there are often jazz titles, seldom do they get to play real jazz harmonies. Larry McKenna is a master at composing a song that is very easy with great voice leadings using real jazz style chords. The flutes get to play trills in a couple of places. The melody is just very nice and easy to play. 1st trumpet's highest note is C. Clarinets do not cross the break.
