The Secret of Mercury (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
This work was commissioned by the concert band Da Capo Leeuwarden from the Netherlands, which was linked with the Dutch postal service PTT up until 1995. Mercury happens to be the messenger of the gods, a kind of mailman, one could say. Yet the composer did not choose the god but the planet Mercury as his source of inspiration for this work in four uninterrupted movements. He created a multifaceted work in which the mysterious celestial body is represented, as well as a number of space missions exploring it. This interesting subject matter guarantees a composition that fascinates from start to finish. Duration: 12.15

The Baltic Way (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way, also known as the Baltic Chain, was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of the first movement, 'Struggle for Independence', is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and, in rhythmic terms, contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, 'Tautiska giesm?' (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, 'Decades of Suffering', echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This 'Chain of Freedom' is depicted in the final movement of the work. Duration: 10.30

Hymn of Cittaslow (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
Cittaslow is an international network of more than 220 towns in 30 countries. Its members are towns where people are still finding themselves reminiscing over the old times; towns that are rich in theatres, squares, cafes, restaurants and spiritual places; towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognise the slow course of the seasons, and respect their authentic products, true taste as well as their health. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally slow, and the themes somehow sound familiar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns.Duration: 4.00

The Temple Musician (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
The title of this work is based on the name of the commissioning band: Music Society Asaf (Dutch for Asaph). In the Hebrew Bible, the poet, singer and seer Asaph is in charge of the choir in the house of King David. Various psalms, including Psalm 81, which is used in this work, are attributed to him. The melody of this psalm is flanked by a march-like initial part, and the traditional klezmer melody Uri Tzion features as a spectacular finale.Duration: 7.00

A Man's Destiny (Yn Ieren en Sinen) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
A Man's Destiny has the Frisian line Yn Ieren en Sinen (with much conviction) as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. The composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn in the ensemble until the age of 86. Their favourite piece of music, Canon by Thomas Tallis, provided a great deal of musical inspiration for this characteristic and versatile work in which the flugelhorn plays a significant role.Duration: 11.00

Pilgrims of Wolfryt (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
The work Pilgrims of Wolfryt tells the story of the legend Walfridus (also known as Wolfryt), a resident of the town of Bedum in the Netherlands who was born in the 11th century. Wilfridus had an eventful life: he introduced Christianity to Bedum and helped the town build its first legal system, but ultimately his story ended in demise - murdered alongside his son at the hands of the Vikings. Pilgrims of Wolfryt is a symphonic poem-like masterpiece, full of evocative melodies in a mix of tonalities to make the most of the impressive rhythmic material.Duration: 9.00

Centenary 2019 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. Awakening Village, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. Bintje Monument was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called bintje. The finale, Journey into the Unknown, refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of the folksong and fragments from The Star-Spangled Banner. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanising rhythmical passages.Duration: 10.15

Proud (Grutsk) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
For Concert Band, Bagpipes and Drums. This impressive work was composed for the Dutch-Friesian city of Leeuwarden, which was considered the cultural capital of Europe, 2018; the composer spent his college years in this city. This festive work for bagpipes, drums and fanfare band is based on the melody of the anthem of the province of Friesland. Proud was written for the music event, Grutsk, which is the Friesian word for proud, hence the title. Various bands have performed on five different stages across the town centre. The finale was performed in a concert held at Wilhelminaplein (Wilhelmina Square), which opened with this work. This world premiere was conducted by the composer himself.
