£317.99Music of the Spheres (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. ('Harmonia' in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notes form the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.Duration: 15:30

Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L'Orfeo (1607). According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintet consisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. When Philip Sparke composed this piece he tried to create a work that characterised man's ability to overcome personal tragedy and the feeling of serenity gained when the tragedy is forgotten. To do this he decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat, such as a ferocious forest fire to re-grow. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict, catharsis, inner calm and finally triumph. Born in Jarrow, northeast England, in 1949, John Miles was something of a child prodigy, learning the piano from the age of five. In the early '60s he persuaded his father to buy him a guitar and by the end of the decade he had joined a semi-professional band, The Influence. The group soon disbanded and by 1969 Miles was recording with his own group, The John Miles Band, releasing a dozen singles in the early '70s. In 1975 Miles decided to move to London and secured a deal with Decca Records. In spite of displaying remarkable musical gifts Chabrier (1841-1894) was sent by his father to study law and in due course, having taken a law degree, went to work in his native French Ministry of the Interior, stay there for eighteen years. During the whole of this time he was developing his real interests in music and painting, including composing operettas and music for the piano. Following a holiday in Spain in 1883, Chabrier wrote a rhapsody for orchestra based on Spanish tunes he had heard. This became Espana; it achieved immediate acclaim and is still his most performed work. Joyeuse Marche (originally called Marche Francaise) was written in 1888. It exudes Chabrier's rhythmical exuberance, spontaneity and wit, bringing pleasure and joy to performers and listeners alike. Truly a march which lives up to its title.
