Southdown - Score and Parts - Ray Steadman-Allen
Program NotesRay Steadman-Allen is one of the most foremost composers of the Salvation Army. He has over 400 pieces published and has been a most inventive and creative composer since his first composition was published in 1945. Having officer parents meant Ray grew up in the Salvation Army. He himself became an officer in 1950 and subsequently held many positions within the SA culminating in 1967 when he was appointed as the Head of Music Editorial where he was responsible for selecting and editing all music to be published by the SA. His versatility means he can compose music for all occasions and for all instrumental combinations; from Championship section test pieces to a straight forward setting of a children's song.The march Southdown represents music of a simpler nature from this great composer and was composed originally for a music school in Bolney Court. Bolney Court, near Brighton, is close to the downs in the southern county of Sussex, hence the title. It follows the traditional form of a march and will be an attractive addition to the repertoire of most types of wind-band.

Before entering the International Training College in 1914 to become a Salvation Army officer he developed as a musician through the playing of the cornet and euphonium of the Corps band. In 1926 he was transferred to the Music Editorial Department and also became a member of the International Staff Band. During a period of 9 years he was the Bandmaster of the Rosehill Band with whom he made many recordings and broadcasts. Later he directed a number of other significant Salvation Army bands and also served time abroad in Czechoslovakia.Programme NoteMarch Rosehill was composed by the conductor of the Rosehill band, a one Colonel Albert Jakeway and was named after the premises that were occupied by the Salvation Armys Assurance Society when they were evacuated during the World War 2. It is a majestic march that will find good use in a performance or marching band.

Theo Van Doren was an Antwerp musician, violinist and composer who, despite many foreign offers, preferred to stay in his own Antwerp. He started his career as a musician in silent movies, then as a soloist, with his own string trio. Later he became solo violinist in the Flanders' Opera Orchestra and conductor. He worked with a.o. Strawinksy, Rubinstein, Stern, etc. He also taught violin for 35 years at the Borgerhout music academy, where he trained many professional musicians.

Johan Svendsen (1840 - 1911) was the first great Norwegian symphonic composer, as well as one of the leading conductors of his time. Next to Edv. Grieg, he was the most prominent figure in Norwegian music life at the end of the 1800's. Although he came from humble beginnings in Chistiania (now Oslo), he was to become a cosmopolitan who felt at home all over Europa. Svendsen spent most of his adult life abroad, living in Copenhagen for 25 years as maestro for the Royal Theatre Orchestra. Nonetheless he retained contact with Norway troughout these years and was a frequent and popular guest in his native country. He wrote his Festival Polonaise for a ball in 1873. Few composers have had such an impact on Swedish music life as Tor Aulin (1866 1914). He studied violin and music theory in Stockholm 1877 83, and in Berlin 1884 86. In 1887 he founded the Aulin Quartet, which for more than 20 years played animportant role in broadening Swedish interest in chamber music. The quartet was often on tour with the composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano.1889 1902 Aulin was the leader of the orchestra at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.At Aulinsinstigation the Concert Association in Stockholm (later The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1902, and he was its conductor until 1909. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition. In 1996 Jerker Johansson arranged this work for soloinstruments, one for each of the four movements, and concert band. The solo instruments being clarinet, trumpet, flute and alto saxophone.

4 Miniatures for Winds: 1. Wind 2. Storm 3. Rain 4. Sun and Snow There was a little child who enthusiastically told a story ... and a composer who was equally inspired by the child and its story to write these miniatures. At the premier performance of my composition "Arcus" in March 2011, when I explained how a piece about the rainbow came into being, a little girl came up to me and asked: "Thiemo, what about the man in the clouds?" I obviously had forgotten to include him, though he is as the little girl informed me of extreme importance in the sky: "He sits in the clouds and is responsible for the weather. He shakes rain, wind, storm or snow out of the clouds, he pushes them aside to let the sunshine through or he models them into funny figures, making people on earth smile." Fascinated by the girl's ingenuous ideas I created this small composition, sitting in my study and letting my mind wander into the sky. As the man in the clouds naturally has to have a name, I decided to call him "Cloud(iu)s ... man in the clouds". I dedicate this piece to the children of my beginner's band, who show me again and again how wonderful and precious it is to delight in the small things in life ...
