RED MACHINE (Concert Band) - Graham, Peter
Among the Coldstream Guard's duties is the famous changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace where their reputation for precision marching has led to them being described as the 'Red Machine'. The music reflects the title and heritage of this fine group; from the aggressive, machine-type music of the opening, the contrasting nostalgic French-flavoured waltz through the recapitulation and vivace finale. Listeners may hear references to music associated with the band, from Holst (the Planets) through the opening phrase of the chorale Ein Feste Burg - familiar to British Guards Bands from the troop march Huguenots.

SECOND SUITE IN F (Young Edition) - Holst, Gustav - Longfield, Robert
Along with his First Suite in E-flat, Holst's Second Suite is among the most treasured landmark works for band. In this adaptation, Robert Longfield has adjusted the extreme ranges, used the instrumentation of the contemporary young concert band, and added liberal cues (particularly for oboe, bassoon, and horn). However, the integrity of the original (form, keys, harmony, etc.) is completely intact. An absolute must for young bands. Includes a full performance CD. Dur: 11:00

TWO SONGS WITHOUT WORDS (Concert Band) - Holst, Gustav - Erickson, Frank
Two Songs Without Words was composed in 1906 and was dedicated to Ralph Vaughan Williams and is similar in style to his two suites for band. The Country Song opens with the principal theme as an unaccompanied clarinet solo, followed by its repetition in the full woodwind section. The main theme returns in a "maestoso" setting before fading into a quite closing. Marching Song is characterized by a distinctive running sixteenth note figure. The principal melody, first played by the low woodwinds, is punctuated by these same running sixteenth note fragments. Both themes are again repeated with much variation before the tempo picks up into a short coda-style ending.

The Cosmographic Mystery - Ingebjørg Vilhelmsen
"The Cosmographic Mystery" outlines the great mysteries and secrets of the universe. The musical foundation is a tribute to composer Gustav Holst, and his suite "The Planets". Each movement from the suite is quoted in the course of the piece. The title is taken from a book by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, which was published in the 17th century. The book explains Kepler's cosmological theory that the distance relationship between the planets could be understood in light of the five Platonic solids. The theory proposes that the solids dictate the structure of the universe through geometry. "The Cosmographic Mystery" is supported by the Norwegian Composers' Fund, and was commissioned by Oslofjord brass.
