Coogee Funk is a wild and fast paced exploration of funk riffs and rhythms. Inspired by a trip to Sydney in 2005, it is divided into three core sections. The work opens with a blazing brash fanfare that, after a distant call from an off-stage saxophone quartet, subsides into a drunken nautical seascape. After a series of solos from flugel horn and saxophone the work charges headlong into a wild funk fugue which soon rears out of control. A lonely horn solo brings the piece to a melancholic close.

Written in 1881, this Serenade in E-flat for 13 wind instruments was written by Richard Strauss when he was only 17 years old. His father, the principal horn player with Munich's court orchestra, had a select list of older composers that he preferred, including Mozart and Mendelssohn, and his father's influence can be seen in his son's work, both in the inclusion of a larger horn section and the use of his father's more conservative musical preferences. The work is much more than simply a capable imitation of Mozart and Mendelssohn, though. It represents Strauss' filtering and distillation of these influences into something remarkably original and identifies the young man's future as one of the great composers. This edition by famed band master Frederick Fennell addresses balance issues and supplies the director with some additional instrumentation options. This latest installment with Canzonique Music is a wonderfully inspiring work. It was commissioned by Jerry Peel, professor of horn at the University of Miami, and was recorded by Peel and the University of Miami Wind Ensemble; Gary Green, Director. Pele was programmed for the College Band Directors National Conference in Baltimore (2004) with guest artist Philip Munds, Principal Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Towson University Symphonic Band, with the composer conducting. Pele was inspired by the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire (or Volcano Goddess) by the same name. She was passionate, volatile, and capricious. This lyrical work is an emotional rollercoaster in which we experience a glimpse of her personality - from her quiet moments to her most volatile.

'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation.
