Musica Helvetica (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.Duration: 12.00

Meditation (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
Meditation is based on Dear Lord and Father of Mankind (1887) by the English composer and organist Frederick Charles Maker (1844-1927). This is a calm, introverted work that however has an intense effect. In the first section, the solo euphonium is given an important role, leading to one of the loveliest of all English hymn melodies.Duration: 6:45

Finlandia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sibelius, Jean - Bullock, Jack
Sibelius' hymn from his popular original composition, Finlandia, is often incorrectly referred to as a Finish folk song. This cherished musical material is ideal to teach tonal colour, intonation and phrasing to young instrumental groups. Uniquely the phrases rest on the first beat of the measure and also reinforce rhythmic stability. A welcomed addition!Duration: 1:30

Joy to the World (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Mason, Lowell - Noble & Rutter
The music was adapted and arranged by Lowell Mason in 1839 from an older melody which was then believed to have originated from Handel, not least because the theme of the refrain (And heaven and nature sing...) appears in the orchestra opening and accompaniment of the recitative Comfort Ye from Handel's Messiah, and the first four notes match the beginning of the choruses Lift up your heads and Glory to God from the same oratorio. However, Handel did not compose the entire tune. As of the late 20th century, Joy to the World was the most-published Christmas hymn in North America.

Three Scenes from Penn's Woods (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jager, Robert
Referring to the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, this suite of three appealing settings reflects on the origins and character of this state. The suite opens with the lighthearted 6/8 setting "Punxsutawny Phil." Next is "Moravian Hymn Variants" which is solemn and rich-sounding, but with a brief spirited middle variation. "Independence Hall" concludes this well-written work in a stately and majestic style.Duration: 7:30

See the Conquering Hero Comes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Handel, George Frideric - Kennedy, Edward
See the Conquering Hero Comes was composed by the great baroque composer George Friedrich Handel and is a chorus from his popular Oratorio Judas Maccabaeus. The work was composed in 1746 and was first performed in Covent Garden, London in 1747. In 1884, Edmund Louis Budry wrote new words to this chorus to create the very stirring and well known hymn "Thine Be the Glory." This theme and variations arrangement of Handel's famous piece features all sections of the band and makes a very effective concert opener or finale for young bands.Duration: 2.45
