Raise Your Joys And Triumphs High

This beautiful setting of one of the most popular hymns ever written, "Christ The Lord is Risen Today," was respectfully commissioned by the Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Mu in memory of James Morgan. Its musical impact is undeniably both breathtaking and stunning beyond all descriptive words. The emotional conclusion of this work allows for the audience to sing the hymn while an antiphonal brass section soars high above with emotional reverence. Both of these creative ideas are purely optional, but they should be definitely thought of as highly effective when applied. Inspiring!

    Freedom Rising - David Shaffer

"Freedom Rising" was written in commemoration of the 150 anniversary of Quantrill's raid on the unsuspecting town of Lawrence, Kansas where the residents bravely fought to defend their town from the forces of pro-slavery western counties. Opening with a dark and haunting woodwind choir, the composition quickly journeys into the raging battle that took place that fateful August day in 1863. The slower middle section is a powerful hymn expressing the hope of all townspeople for a successful defense to this sneak-attack. The dramatic powerful conclusion leaves us with the knowledge that this community fought desperately for the freedom of all people. A powerful piece that brings to life this brief but important period in American history.

How Deep The Father's Love For Us

"How Deep The Father's Love For Us" is a timeless hymn from British songwriter and Christian worship leader Stuart Townend, written just before the end of the 20th century. This poignant setting for band by Anthony LaBounty was written to honor Mr. William Leslie, the father of beloved colleague Thomas Leslie, and purposely borrows vignettes of imagery recognized in Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, among other orchestration elements. The tune is melodious and alluring; equal to the text bountiful in poetic language illuminating the scriptural epitome of the ultimate love of a father.

    Sunscapes - Wilson

This exciting work depicts the lively and sunny nature of the state of Florida. Opening with a brilliant and majestic section highlighting the state's bright and vibrant culture, a flowing melody follows, representing the calming winds and consistent breeze of the state. Dance is a large part of Florida's culture, especially in its southern region, and the 7/8 rhythm captures an Afro-Latin style dance movement. The chorale/hymn section is based on the "Florida Song," which is a traditional school song of many schools, including Florida A&M in Tallahassee. The work then recapitulates and moves toward a driving and joyful conclusion. An excellent contest/festival work!
