£121.00Ignatian Fanfare - John R. Bourgeois
Written for the centennial of Loyola University, New Orleans and premiered by the Loyola University Band on April 12, 2012 with the composer conducting. This fanfare is based on a motive from the Jesuit motto "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("to the greater glory of God") and is based on the notes A, D, G. The fanfare opens with timpani, a tintinnabulum of bells and brass, and wolf calls in the horns. A martial hymn tune appears which evokes the soldierly order of Ignatius Loyolas early years. The work closes with a rhythmic ostinato based on the words "Fight, fight, fight, ye men of the South!" The composer is a graduate of Loyola and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2005.

Bright Shining as the Sun was commissioned by the Poplar Bluff, Missouri High School Band in honor of Kyle Dicken, who perished while trying to save his younger brother from a tragic house fire. As a band member, Kyle played the tuba and trombone and was a dedicated and popular member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Marching Band. The hymn tune Amazing Grace is used throughout the work, both as a motive during the fast sections and in its entirety during the expressive middle section. As a tribute to his memory this work was played by members of the Poplar Bluff Band at Kyles memorial service.

100 years ago English composer Vaughan Williams visited Norfolk (an area on the east coast of England) to collect and notate folk songs from people of all trades and callings. Accompanied by a local clergyman, he visited The Tilden Smith, a pub which was a favourite haunt of the 'Northenders', the local fishermen, and in less than a week the composer had notated 61 songs. Vaughan Williams incorporated the best of these songs into his own music, most notably in A Norfolk Rhapsody and the Sea Symphony. Philip Sparke has composed this new suite based on five of these folk songs together with King's Lynn, a folk song which Vaughan Williams adapted into a popular hymn tune. This tumultuous composition tells the legend of the town of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle lived a dragon. When it appeared it threatened to destroy the town with it fiery breath if a human sacrifice was not offered. St Michael confronted the dragon in a battle without equal. As a knight armed with a double edged sword the archangel battled against the dragon and decapitated it. Thus the city was saved. To represent the archangel the composer has chosen the hymn tune Laudate Dominum . The dragon is symbolised by a series of menacing chords.
