This Latin mass for choir and wind band was composed in honour of Saint Cecilia's feast day, Saint Cecilia being the patroness of musicians. For this reason, many ensembles have annual concerts dedicated to Saint Cecila, which was the inspiration for this piece. It is a festive, optimistic, but also comforting work, which in style perfectly suits the character of Saint Cecilia's Feast Day. The symphonic poem Night on a Bald Mountain took its inspiration from a story by the well known Russian writer Nicola Gogol. Mussorgsky took no steps to promote his masterpiece and it was only after his death when Rimsky-Korsakov was looking through the enormous stack of manuscripts that the work resurfaced. Written above the score, Mussorgsky gives a brief description of the story of Night on a Bald Mountain: Gathering Witches, their gossip and chit-chat; The Procession of Satan; Pagan Worship of Satan and Witches Sabbath. Ponte Romano Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups.
