Spring March - Jonathan Dagenais

Engelberg Variations - William G. Harbinson
Engelberg Variations was composed for the Hibriten High School Band in Lenoir, North Carolina and is based on the hymn, "When In Our Music God Is Glorified." It opens with a flourish of activity from the brass and percussion. This gives way to the statement of the theme set in a lovely woodwind chorale featuring flutes and oboes. A lyrical trumpet solo takes the band to a soaring tutti statement of the theme which gets interrupted by a percussion-filled staccato variation. Fragments of the theme are then heard in fun variations juxtaposed against the original theme in augmentation. is destined to become a classic!

Variations on L. B. I. F. D.
Alfred Reed needs no introduction for those who admire his distinguished concert band works. This arrangement for concert band draws from five movements of his original 28 composed for brass quintet based on "London Bridge Is Falling Down." Included are: "Statement," "Waltz," "March Fo(u)rth!," "A Little Funeral Music, Please (Eine Kleine Trauermusik)," and "Finale." A demonstration of compositional techniques practiced during the past three centuries, the work is filled with captivating and highly musical moments. Even though players will encounter a few changes in tonal centers, meters, and tempo throughout, there is not much that would get in the way of having a fun experience learning and performing. (2:45)

Legacy - Ryan Meeboer
is a song of heroic nature and is a great way to introduce polyrhythmic texture to a young band. This piece opens with a high energy feel that can represent a hero. The piece moves into a lyrical section that can be portrayed as the hero's downfall. A new melody is introduced by the alto saxophone solo, which is later countered by the flute and trumpets. The high energy melody returns again, bringing the piece to an exciting conclusion.

Prelude and Celebration - Jonathan Dagenais
An interesting element of this work is that the two main themes were originally composed by the young students on recorders. The piece was built around those themes and the result is a colorful and contrasting work full of rhythmic and melodic interest. On the last section of the Celebration, all the players join together to sing a C pedal tone as a warm accompaniment for three soloists. It is a way to show that we need unity, support and fun in a band to achieve successful performances.

A Somerset Rhapsody - Gustav Holst / arr. Douglas E. Wagner
Written at the peak of the early 20th century period of intense folk music interest in Great Britain, draws upon tunes collected by Cecil Sharp (to whom the work is dedicated) in his travels throughout that area of exceptional natural beauty in Southwest England. Holst chose three of these folk songs that are seamlessly presented in this arrangement: the pensive "Sheep Shearing Song," the bold "High Germany," and the doleful "The True Lover's Farewell." Penned in 1906, displays definite hints of the iconic (1909) and (1911) for military band soon to come. This arrangemment by Douglas E. Wagner, is an excellent way to introduce your students to the music of Holst. (2:50)
